XPS 17 9730, missing keystroke

XPS 17 9730

XPS 17 9730

It only occurs while plugged in with any adapters, including the original one. The issue disappears after unplugging for about a minute. I have tried:
1. Update & reinstall driver

2. Reset Windows to win11 and win10

3. Hard reset the laptop

4. Replace the battery

Nothing works. The problem even exists in bios, so I doubt it is either a BIOS issue or the motherboard is going wrong. Since a BIOS update also solves similar posts here, I wonder how long we can get a new one for this model. The laptop is unusable now.

Hi all,

Exciting news!

We are pleased to announce that the new BIOS version 1.9.0 is now available for the Dell XPS 17 9730. You can download it here: Dell XPS 17 9730 System BIOS

Please ensure to follow the installation instructions provided on the same link.

After installation, kindly let us know if this resolves the issue with the missing keystrokes.

Thank you for your patience!

The replacement unit has the same issue. How to reproduce it easily:
1. Original adapter plug in
2. Install Epic
3. Open Epic
4. Open a txt
5. Type 1234567890 for about 10 times.
6. You'll notice some numbers are missing.

This issue is not about epic. A lot of other programs opened while plugged in cause this issue as well. I have tried everything I can imagine. I still think it is a bios problem but I may not have the time to wait for the solution. Might return both units.

Another way is to enter the BitLocker recovery page (plugged in). While entering the keys, it is easy to notice some keystrokes are missing. It happens to both factory and clean-installed win11.

I have exactly the same issue (missing keystrokes when plugged in).

I think that we can be confident that it is a BIOS related issue:

- The fact that we are at least 2 with exactly the same behavior

- The fact that this happen only when plugged-in

I have the same model, which is less than 1 month old, but i can't remember if the issue was here on factory BIOS or if the issue appeared just after i updated to latest BIOS version (which was the day i received the laptop).

As a developper, having this issue is a real pain to work correctly. I hope that if more people show that this issue exists, then BIOS team will be able to focus on this rapidly.

I do not plan to return it, since i already got this model as a replacement from my 9720, which had an issue with fans crackling when they start (which btw is also present from day 1 on my new 9730, so another BIOS issue here i think)

Overall XPS build quality and components are really nice, i think this is just a matter of fixing softwares issues, but yeah if nothing is made (or at least aknowledge) about this issue, i may have to take actions...

Let's see)

Do you have any solutions or plan to return it? This issue occurs on both my original and replacement issue, so it can be confirmed to be a common problem.

@DELL-Nat M Hi, Does this mean that Dell know there is a problem? I have had a Dell engineer over today and he replaced the motherboard. The problem still exists. Does this mean dell are working on a solution.  As ive typed this message it missed about 6 keys.  The output of the this sentence looked like this.  "The outpt of the this senence loked lik this."   As you can see its not very easy to work on the laptop without using an external keyboard.

I had an email exchange with a Dell representative and made them aware of the problem. After a lot of back and forth they said they found the problem and promised it would be fixed with a bios update. Here is his email in German from November 24 where they describe the problem and promise to fix it (use Google translate if you must):

@DELL-Nat M I am in an endless conversation with your Dell Support AI, even though I have posted your post I did not get a BIOS. Could you please send it to me or let me know where to get it?

@mulgul Hi! Could you please send me your active case number in private? So I can send that to the concerned team.

I was able to get my setup to stop repeating and missing key strokes and stop mouse stalls.
My setup is a 9730 laptop with the power in one USBC port, a docking hub with internet and HDMI plug in the next USBC slot, my KVM switch into the next USBC slot and my Thunderbolt drive unit with 4 M.2 drives in the final USBC slot. This was causing key misses, repeats, mouse stalls.

I then plugged the KVM cord into the back of the Thunderbolt drive since it had a USBC port on the back and just had the drive plugged into the laptop - no more issues.

I think the Mouse/keyboard kvm and the thunderbolt were conflicting with each other plugged into separate USBC ports on the laptop. Chaining them by plugging the KVM into drive then that into the laptop cleared up the problem for me.
