XPS 14 9440, display issues

XPS 14 9440

XPS 14 9440

Over the past few weeks, when the laptop has just been switched on- ie it is cold, I am getting screen artifacts (rgb single pixel dots) like snow on the screen and the display flickers on and off. If the display is moved then the flickering gets worse, or if I type, while the flickering is ongoing then it also comes on and off in time with the keypresses.

All drivers have been up-to-date and this fault occurs on the BIOS boot screen before windows has loaded, so it looks more hardware than software.

I get the problem on both battery and with an adapter plugged in.

Is anybody else having similar issues?

Just to close this off, I made a warranty claim and dell replaced the LCD panel which has cleared the fault.

The service team were excellent and as always the replacement service was fast and painless.

You can run a screen diagnostic by holding the D key through powerup -- if the fault shows there (and it likely will, given the symptom description), contact Dell to have the display assembly replaced under warranty.

I have the same issue on the same model laptop. How was your issue resolved?

Hi, it hasn’t yet as I’m away from home with work. I’m just about to raise a service request on Monday

By using an external monitor, I think that the lcd panel is at fault as, when the primary display shows the fault, the external display is fine.

I’ll update here once I’ve spoken to dell

I have this problem too.

I always had a lot of care with my PC.

It hapends olny with the laptop screen not with external.

Technician has come, he changed the motherborad (i.e. CPU, GPU) (not the cooling system) and the whole screen. The problem had been resolved for like a month but it had reapered after it exactly the same way.

Called the customer service, they planned a new service at home with no problem. I just wanted to change the whole PC bc im a bit anoyed but they told me it's only the third time they can do that. I hope the problem will be fixed though because at this price this kind of problem is not suposed to hapen twice.

Experiencing all the same things. Just got LCD replaced as well. Problem has returned afterwards, and now they're saying it's software related.

Hi,

Following the replacement mine was great until last week when once again the screen went black and started flickering with lines. I cured it by moving the screen and everything popped back to life. It hasn’t reoccurred so I’m waiting to see if it was a glitch or I still have an ongoing problem.

Are they saying yours is a driver issue then?

They didn't specify- just said it can't be a hardware problem since LCD has been fixed. Will keep troubleshooting.

I’m experiencing the exact same issue. Should I consider making a warranty claim, or is there a high chance that a replacement device would have the same problem? Is there perhaps a fix available from your side? I rely on my laptop for university, so being without it for several weeks would be a real inconvenience.

@Wolli2005 Hi, I'd make a warranty claim as it needs highlighting that there are issues. Mine has calmed down again since the screen replacement, and even when it glitches, it is still lots better than it was before the screen was replaced.

I have the same issue.
It sometimes resolves through Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics card.
The external monitor always works fine.
The diagnostics incl holding the D down shows no issues,
Also starting up and pressing F12 to run that diagnostics shows no issues - BUT it also solves the problem as the laptop monitor displays this menu - it flickers a bit and then shows that screen, which would suggest that it is a Windows software issue as the boot before Windows is fine but when Windows loads the issue is back.
I bought the machine in the US but am now in South Africa for the next 4 months so not sure how to get this resolved other than carrying my external monitor around!
