XPS 13 Plus 9320, again with BIOS 2.16.1: capacitive panel backlight too bright

Hi,

With BIOS 2.16.1 the same issue is appearing as with 2.15.0 reported here:
https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/xps/xps-13-plus-9320-capacitive-panel-backlight-too-bright/66f140ff631be3413cd50899

Why couldn't this be fixed - other people confirmed the issue? As version 2.16.1 contains important security fixes, I want to keep that version (there is no other choice anyway, as downgrade is not possible), but now I need to apply a light filter to the capacitive panel and battery drains faster.

Please work on this with high priority and provide another update.

Here is the description again:

The backlight of the capacitive panel (above the physical keys, providing extra and function keys) turns to maximum brightness when booting Linux. This is dazzling and therefore not possible to work (or at least ergonomically, maintaining work focus) in dark environments, so I reverted to 2.14.0, with moderate brightness as before. Nothing else was changed.

I'm working with Debian GNU/Linux 12.7 (Bookworm), but also tried Ubuntu (not from DELL image) by USB stick. I guess that it will be reproducable with the official Ubuntu version for this model (which I can't try on the fly because I don't see a path to install to USB stick for testing).

And it is not possible to downgrade? I tried to downgrade to 2.14 but the downgrade is blocked for "security reasons". However, I really can't work with the keyboard like that, I'd rather be hacked than having to suffer through this considering that it is both my working and personal notebook.  Plus, it's a pain in the eyes in the evening and I can't watch movies because I'm constantly distracted by the capacitive panel that turned into a flashlight. How could dell mess up so bad? I mean, don't they test their softwares before releasing them?

@ale_hellstroem I covered the capacitive panel with thin paper reducing emission of light. So I can still use the laptop in a comfortable way. But this patch makes the laptop look not very professional.

@laptopper49201b thank you for the advice, I'm doing the same for now so at least I can use the notebook, but that's unbelievable. It's really unacceptable that we have to stick a piece of paper on our 2000+ € notebook because Dell released a broken upgrade with no possibility of downgrade. And they are not even providing a fix for this!

Thankfully just saw this before upgrading. @DELL-Nat M in the existing thread (as mentioned above) for this you advised that Dell Engineering is already on the case and working on a fix. How is the release of 2.16.1 having the same issue explained?

Thanks

FYI - Dell Engineering is already working on a solution, and we’ll share updates as soon as we have more information.

@DELL-Nat M Fortunately, I also found an article where someone is facing the same issue as me. I'm using the XPS 9320 and encountering this problem as well. I feel a bit 'frustrated' because of these issues after the BIOS upgrade. Moreover, after the update, the keyboard backlight only has a 50% brightness setting instead of the previous 50% and 100% options. Dell needs to release an update soon to resolve these issues.

One month has passed. Dell doesn't care about its customers. I'm paying for an extended warranty and I don't know why.

I wish I wasn't too responsible in updating my precious and very expensive laptop ¯\(°_o)/¯ Now that the panel is too bright it looks like it was bought from a chinese dealer who sells fake laptops. Or worse, it looks like it IS a cheap laptop. Which definitely is not. DELL HEAR US.

Not sure what is more concerning, the time that goes while this is still not fixed or the fact that this specific issue happening in the first place means that there is either no regression testing happening whatsoever or it is just there to list the issues and then go ahead with the BIOS release?

I was planning to get another XPS laptop soon but after this I'm reconsidering.

@dmscg now I get why people like macbooks so much. You never have to deal with these <Profanity is never needed nor allowed on our Forum. DELL-Admin>. I thought that I would be safe at least with Dell's flagships, but apparently we were all wrong! Never gonna make this mistake ever again

If you have upgraded to the latest BIOS and experiencing the issue, contact Technical Support by clicking the blue "Get Help Now". They will first verify the ownership and warranty status. Then they will provide the next revision of the BIOS based on “Dell Pre-Release terms”. Note: Once you agree to the Dell Pre-Release terms, they may take up to 48 hours to share the file with you.

Has anyone here had any luck with the "solution" proposed by @Dell-Chris M? Technical support keeps ignoring me, and I'm wondering if the new BIOS really solves this problem and it's worth keep bothering trying to get it or if I should just give up

@ale_hellstroem The pre-release BIOS solved the issue for me. As the terms don't allow to distribute it, one must keep trying with the technical support. Eventually it helps to mention that it is internally provided by the L3 support.
