XPS 13 9310 CMOS battery failure

XPS 13 9310

XPS 13 9310

Within the past week, the diagnostic LED on my XPS 13 9310 started flashing--amber three times and white once. I looked up what this meant and identified the issue as a CMOS battery failure. The problem is that the CMOS battery in a XPS 13 9310 isn't a coin battery that I can simply replace. I read somewhere that the CMOS battery is actually built into the main battery, but I'm not sure if this is true. Since then, the diagnostic flashing became more frequent and now it is constantly flashing amber. Also, my laptop doesn't charge anymore, but the battery doesn't seem to drain its charge as long as the charger is plugged in.

If the issue is only with the CMOS battery is there a way to simply replace that, or do I have to completely replace the battery?

I found a solution. I opened the back panel of the Dell XPS 13 9310 and unplugged the battery for a few minutes and plugged it back in. After closing the panel and booting the laptop, there seem to be no battery issues anymore.

I have a XPS-13_9310 here, but have never had that error, or a reason to remove the bottom-cover and look inside.

It is strange it mentions that error code about "coin cell battery failure" but then no other mention of it in the PDF Service-Manual (like how to remove/replace it).

Did it happen to run-down it's battery and sit in a closet for a long time (or some other accidental event)?

I could say more about my experience with how these little CMOS/RTC batteries are implemented in my other (slightly older) laptops, but I don't think it is actually relevant here.

I would be interested in hearing about your experiences. my husband’s Inspiron sat unplugged and unused for the past two years. Not in a closet, but under the couch, lol! He recently got it out to update his music in iTunes, and I’ve spent several days trying to load all of the past two year’s worth of updates. Along with that, the light on the front of the laptop is blinking amber and white nonstop- and based upon the key I located, it appears to indicate a CMOS battery failure.

@Tesla1856 That's because the XPS 13 doesn't have a separate coin cell CMOS battery. It's built in to the main battery. Most laptop manufacturers have gone to this in recent years because it saves money and usually main batteries get replaced before the CMOS battery anyway. To do a full BIOS reset when the XPS won't even boot into BIOS settings you need to disconnect the battery for at least 5-6 minutes and while disconnected hold down power button for about 30 seconds.
