Stuck "testing hard drive" during System Performance Check
XPS 13 9370
I'm trying to get an XPS 13 9370 up and running. It hasn't been turned on for a couple of years (my brother passed away, and I last turned it on shortly after).
When I first turned it on, it spent a LONG time on the Dell boot logo (probably 5-10 minutes). Then on the Windows login screen, I couldn't get it to show me a password prompt. Something was wrong.
I rebooted and pressed F12 to run a system diagnostic test. The first section went through quickly and easily, but when it got to the "Testing Hard Drive" phase, things went wonky... When it started "testing hard drive" it has a 4 minute estimated completion time. 48 hours later and it's still testing, now with 2m57sec estimated time left.
Any ideas on how I should move forward with trouble-shooting?

Unplug the system, remove the base cover and disconnect the battery from the system board. Hold the power button for 30 sec. Remove and reinstall the SSD and re-try the test. If it appears to take that length of time again, chances are the SSD is failing. You can then try removing the drive and re-running the diagnostics. If they complete quickly without the drive, that's likely the case and you'll need to replace the SSD.

@ejn63, thank you for this help! I'm done as you suggest (disconnect battery, reseat SSD, etc) and I seem to be fully up and running now. You've saved me a lot of time and money.
Thank you! :-)
