Replacing SSD on XPS 13

I'd like to replace the SSD on my XPS 13 9380 with a bigger one. I've seen some tutorials around and I have some questions:

1) Is there a capacity limit for the new SSD?

2) Are there some specific factors I have to take into consideration? Does a bigger SSD use more battery? Cause more heat?

3) Is there a way to clone the old SSD to the new one without passing through a third USB drive, which is the option I've seen recommended? (clone the old SSD to the USB drive, replace SSD, boot the system from the USB, clone the USB to the new one). I need some sort of connector/adapter, do they exist?

1.  Anything up to 4T will work as long as it physically fits.

2.  Some drives do consume more power than others, and it can be a function of both the speed and capacity of the drive. Yes, these do run hotter.

3.  You need either an external drive to hold the image, or an NVMe to USB adapter to hold one of the drives during the imaging process.

Thank you for your reply. While I'm at it: how can I know whether the new USB will run hotter and/or use more power? Is it possible to deduce this from the specs, or do I just have to look for a review?

Most manufacturers post power consumption specifications for their drives -- you can use that as a guide.  In general, the faster, high performance PCIe 4 drives use considerably more power than PCIe 3 drives -- and since you can't benefit from PCIe 4 in your system (it has a PCIe 3 interface), step back from buying a high performance drive for this model system unless you have a compelling reason to do so.

Since you can't upgrade the storage or RAM inside the Dell XPS 13, it's more important than ever to choose the right configuration when you first buy the laptop.
