Latitude 7490 Replacement Batter Not Recognized

Latitude 7490

Latitude 7490

I got a refurbished Latitude 7490.  After just couple of month, battery died.  It was 42Wh battery and all swollen.  So, I got a replacement 60Wh battery and installed it.  Now the computer does not recognize it.  Message is "No battery present".  I tried disconnecting both battery and AC adaptor, pushing the power button to discharge, and restarting.  Still does not work.  In BIOS mode, AC adaptor is recognized (130W) but batter is not ("no battery installed").   Restore the BIOS setting and still does not work.

I tried "Scan for hardware change" in the device manager and "Update driver" on "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery".  It says "The best drivers for your devices are already installed".

Computer runs fine on AC adaptor but as soon as I unplug it, it dies.

What should I do?

1. Is it a genuine Dell battery? Dell batteries for the 7490 are available from Dell and from Parts-People. (I linked directly to the pages for Latitude 7490 batteries.)  Anywhere else and you must be very cautious, as there are lots of counterfeits that look identical to genuine Dell batteries.

2. Even if it is a Dell battery, perhaps it is too old and so already degraded. Even if a battery is unused, it degrades over time.

3. It's possible that you did not fully connect the new battery. Try disconnecting and reconnecting it.

4. Run Dell Diagnostics:
Immediately after pressing the power button to turn on the laptop (or after clicking the Reboot command), press and hold F12 to enter the One Time Boot Menu, select Diagnostics and press Enter. The Dell Diagnostics will test major hardware components. Choose to run the extended tests.

Thank you, filbert, for your answer.

The actual problem was a lot dumber than I thought.  It was that the connecter socket at the end of the cable was pushing the pin on the battery side into the battery, not making contact.  My IT person says this is a common problem with Dell batteries.  I had to grab over the connecting portion of the battery firmly to hold the pins in place while connecting the cable.

 Thank you.
