Clicking the scroll wheel does not open a link on a new tab on Microsoft Edge

XPS 15 9510

XPS 15 9510

Hi, I am using a Dell mouse (wireless). When I hover over a link and click on the scroll wheel, it doesn't open the link on a new tab on Microsoft Edge. I don't have other browsers installed on my computer.

When I first connected the mouse to my laptop, I was asked to set what clicking the scroll wheel would do and I chose opening a new tab - now I realized that was the wrong setting because clicking the scroll does open a new tab but it's an empty tab that does not open the link. I'm not able to find that setting page for my mouse anymore.

Could you please help?

If you don't already have it running on your laptop, install Dell's Peripheral Manager software. Either way, see if it lets you change the function of the scroll wheel click button. It should be compatible with your mouse.

Otherwise, try Logitech Options. I use Options on my desktop to reconfigure the mouse scroll wheel click for my needs...

Version of Windows?

Have you looked on the Mouse Settings screen to see if you can change that function?

I'm using Windows 11 Home. I've checked "Bluetooth & devices > Mouse" and I couldn't find anything useful there.

Do you know clicking the scroll wheel is supposed to open the link in a new window in Edge/Win 11?

Exactly which Dell mouse are you using?  If it's made by Logitech with Dell's name on it, you might be able to use Logitech's Options software to make clicking the wheel open a link. If you want to try it, manually set a System Restore point before installing Options, to be safe. If it doesn't work and you want to remove it, just do a System Restore to the restore point you manually set.

Or, alternatively, try right-clicking the link and selecting "Open in new tab" or "Open in new window" on the menu.

You can simply hold down the Shift key while clicking on the scroll wheel and it will open the link on a new tab.

Thanks. I'm aware of the alternative options, but I prefer a one-step option of just clicking the scroll wheel.

I am using DELL MS3320W mouse.

How do I do a System Restore? I have set up softwares etc on my laptop, and would prefer not to install all necessary softwares again. I'm aware that I can right click and select "Open in new tab" but it's so much more convenient by clicking the scroll wheel.

Thank you so much. It was Dell's peripheral manager that popped up when I first used my mouse and I set clicking the scroll button to something I didn't intend it to do. I reset the mouse to its default setting on the Dell's peripheral manager and it is working now.
