XPS 8960 will not recognize/connect to NAS

I am in the process of switching from a Dell XPS 8950 to an XPS 8960.  As I have done on a number of previous occasions, I moved the files and programs from the 8950 to the 8960 via Laplink PCMover.  That process worked well as usual. I am running both with Windows 11 Pro.

The 8950 is still in service and can easily connect to my Asustor NAS either by entering the ip address or by clicking on the name of the NAS on the left side of file explorer.  In both cases the shared folders on the NAS appear and thus I can then map them to the PC as additional drives.

However, the 8960 shows "This folder is empty" when I enter the ip address of the NAS. And when I click on the name of the NAS in file explorer a popup reads: "Windows Cannot Read \\NASNAME" While it then suggests I try the troubleshooter, that does not indicate anything.

Because the NAS still shows up properly on the 8950, it would certainly appear that the problem is not with the NAS but with something in how the 8960 is set up.  I have tried a number of suggestions by googling the problem that windows shows "this folder is empty" regarding network connections but to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks, Ken

Success!!  Method 1, Step 2 of this solved the problem. (one of your suggested solutions from above.)  So I am back in business.

Thanks, Ken

Are you using Ethernet or WiFi on XPS 8960 to connect to your network?

Are you sure the OS files, drivers, and software you moved via laplink onto the XPS 8960 are compatible with the new PC?  XPS 8950 and XPS 8960 have different generation Intel CPUs...

Do you have to configure the network connection (Ethernet or WiFi) on XPS 8960 to be able to see the NAS?  Do you have to configure the router to give XPS 8960 permission to connect to the network?

I have used both Wi-fi and Ethernet on the 8960 with the same result. (Also, the 8950 works with both.)

Laplink only transferred application programs and files, no OS files.

As far as I can tell, the appropriate configurations are set for Ethernet and WiFi for the 8960.

The router I use (google nest) does not seem to have any configuration steps to connect to the network.

I thought I would try something else.  I went into the NAS and changed the name of the NAS. Once I did that the new named NAS showed up properly on the 8950.  However, the name did not change on the 8960. So I thought maybe I should delete that network item from the list of items on the 8960 and then try to reboot, etc. and see what happens.  However, I could not figure out a way to delete that.

You say you copied "application programs" from XPS 8950 onto XPS 8960. But that's not the same as installing these apps into Win 11 on XPS 8960.  So did you run each app's setup program to install it on the XPS 8960?

Open Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>Network Connections. Click Tools>Map Network drive on toolbar and see if that helps.

Otherwise, you could try a Network Reset on XPS 8960 and start over.

Laplink actually installed the programs, rather than just copying them to the new PC.

Unfortunately, the suggestions you made did not resolve the problem.

In a prior thread you helped me clone my 1TB SSD to a 2TB SSD. As I have still not done anything with the original SSD, I am thinking about removing the 2TB SSD and putting the old one back in which should bring this PC back to the status that it had immediately after purchase. Then before I do anything else try to see if I can connect to the NAS. If it works, then I will have to try to be "careful" how I set up the PC to avoid the problem.  However, if it doesn't work, then I probably should contact Dell and see whether they can fix the issue.

Don't remember, but did you configure BIOS and Windows to switch from RAID to AHCI before cloning it onto the 2T SSD?  As long as you did that, then removng new SSD and reinstalling the old SSD might be a good test.

This is likely a software issue, so Dell may not want to assist under the warranty.

Read this, this, this, this to see if there's anything helpful for issues accessing an NAS in Win 11.

Yes that was the thread I was referring to. I have glanced at the links you gave me and while I have tried some of those solutions, there are several that I have not yet tried so will do so in the near future. Incidentally, if I end up reinstalling the original 1TB SSD should I also revert back to RAID rather than AHCI?

Don't revert to RAID if you already changed BIOS and reconfigured Windows on old SSD to use AHCI before you imaged it on new SSD.

If you change BIOS back to RAID, but Windows on old SSD is configured to use AHCI, PC won't boot and you could corrupt that entire drive.
