XPS 8960, can't create Windows 11 Recovery USB drive

Hello,

I bought a brand new XPS 8960. I want to create a USB recovery. The operation starts and seems to go well until ask to put flash drive in and click next.  It doesn’t show that it pickup my USB flash drive. I have tried 32 GB and 64 GB flash drives, no luck. Any guidance is appreciated.

Thank you.

You're better off using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB when you need it that will clean install Win 11.  The Dell factory image will likely be way out of date if you should ever want/need to use it.

You can always download any drivers not installed via Windows Update and any software Dell installed from the XPS 8960 Support page.

The term "recovery USB drive" has a variety of meanings.

If you mean a Windows 11 recovery drive, that's a Microsoft feature, so you'll want to follow Microsoft's instructions. (You can skip down to "Use a recovery drive to restore or recover your PC".)

If you mean a Windows 11 reinstallation drive, that too is a Microsoft feature, so you'll want to follow Microsoft's instructions. (You can skip down to "Create Windows 11 Installation Media".)

If you want to restore the original factory image for your 8960, the only way to restore Dell's factory image is with the SupportAssist option accessible on reboot. Dell does not make a bootable recovery drive to restore the factory image for the 8960.

However, there is a solution that beats any form of recovery drive: A backup image of your hard drive.
