XPS 8950, Windows 11, how to configure Wake On Lan?

XPS 8950

XPS 8950

Hi,

I want to configure Wake On Lan for my new XPS 8950, and I could use some help here so I get all of the setting correct. Here's my system:

Windows 11 Home

BIOS American Megatrends 1.8.0 (all current settings are defaults)

i7-12700K, 16GB RAM, Nvidia RTX3060Ti

C: 1TB SSD, 2TB HDD, F: 500GB SSD

Wired LAN - home network

I don't see anything in BIOS regarding WOL.  BIOS Boot menu shows Boot Option Priorities = #1 Windows Boot Manager, #2 Onboard NIC IPV4, #3 Onboard NIC IPV6.

Thank you for any help with this.

@johnblaustein  -After changing the sleep state in BIOS, open Device Manager and double-click the Killer Ethernet entry. Click Advanced tab and scroll down the list of settings. See if "Wake on magic packet" and/or "Wake on pattern match" are enabled.

My Win 10 XPS 8930 also has a "Shutdown Wakeup" option on that Killer Advanced tab, but don't know what that one does. So maybe enable all 3 of these settings until you get it to Wake on LAN and then you can disable the ones you don't need for this.

BTW: Do you know your LAN is actually sending the right wake packet(s) to this PC?

SOLVED!

Like so much with computers, it's easy if you know what you are doing and do it correctly!

What I did not mention (and should have) is that I'm using TeamViewer remotely to wake up my XPS 8950.  Both the remote XPS 15  laptop and the 8950 are on my home network.  My problem was that I did not configure TeamViewer correctly on the 8950.  I neglected one setting.  Once I got that right, along with the 8950 network card settings, WOL works just fine.  Per the instructions, I deactivated Fast Startup in Windows Power Options.  However, I tested WOL with Fast Startup activated and the 8950 woke up without a problem.

If anyone is interested, here are the instructions in the TeamViewer user guide:

https://download.teamviewer.com/docs/en/TeamViewer-Manual-Wake-on-LAN-en.pdf?_ga=2.156864893.797612119.1671753548-1789176695.1671753548

Thanks again to all for the help.

I think it is in the ADVANCED>POWER OPTIONS settings in the BIOS.

Thanks, kras1.  Perhaps someone else will jump in with the solution.

I'm quite sure this has nothing to do with a Windows 11 setting because WOL happens long before Windows starts loading.

I wish I could help you more.  My setting was enabled when I got the PC and I had to disable it.

kras1,

Yes, it's in ADVANCED>POWER OPTIONS.  (Thank you.)  HOWEVER, it is DISABLED and I am unable to select Wake Up by Integrated LAN to change it.  I'm guessing that one of the other options need to be changed to make WOL selectable.

Any further help would be appreciated.Bios.jpg

I think I need to change the Deep Sleep Control, but I'm not sure what the setting should be.  And it looks like Windows needs some settings changed.  I hope someone can help.  Thanks!

I don't really try to use it much any more, but the last time I got it to work on an old Dell, I had to set the BIOS to S3 Sleep-Mode and then wake it with a Magic-Packet.

Hi Tesla1856,

Thank you for that info.  I'll try that.  I see that Magic-Packet is already enabled in my network properties, so that one change--S4 and S5 to S3--should do it.

You have been very helpful to me in other forums here, and I thank you again for your help.

I disabled S4 and S5 and enabled WOL in BIOS.  I also unchecked Fast Shutdown in Power Options.  WOL still isn't working.  As I mentioned before, Magic-Packet is enabled.

This function isn't essential for me, but I may keep trying other solutions at some point.

RoHe..... thanks, I'll try your suggestions.  "BTW: Do you know your LAN is actually sending the right wake packet(s) to this PC?"  No, I don't know if my LAN is sending the right packets.

@johnblaustein - You may also need an extra app to send magic packets to the XPS 8950.

There are some (free) Wake-on-LAN apps for Windows available in the Microsoft store, eg, here, and elsewhere.

Glad you got it working and I want to thank you for posting how you got it working. I'm sure there will be others that will use this info.

I am trying to configure WOL on my XPS 8950 but I just can't make it work.

  1. Disabled deep sleep (S4, S5) and enabled WOL BIOS. I can confirm that S3 sleep is enabled in Windows 11.
  2. Enabled all 3 options in Power Management for Killer Wi-Fi (AX1675x): Allow the computer to turn off.., Allow this device to wake the computer, Only allow a magic packet..
  3. Fast Startup is deactivated.
  4. Wake on Magic Packet and Wake on Pattern Match enabled in Advanced properties.
  5. Wireless Adapter Settings > Power Saving Mode is set to "Maximum Performance" in Power Options for the wireless adapter.
  6. Configured wireless router and verified that the computer is getting a magic packet (used a "Wake on LAN listener on the PC" and an app to send it on my mobile). It's working and the listener shows WOL packets immediately when I send it from my mobile APP
  7. I have TeamViewer running which is also configured for WOL. I can successfully remote to it from another machine

Given that the magic packet shows up when the computer is on, my conclusion is that the wireless card is not communicating with the wireless router when the PC is sleeping. I am not sure if there's anything else I can look at since I went over all of the instructions available on the web and still nothing.

Really frustrating - leaving the country in a week and need this to work

@CroDragon  - Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you did, but don't you want to DISABLE "Allow PC to turn off..."  for the Killer WiFi card?
