XPS 8950, P2723DE, C2723H, setup
Hello everyone,
Last week I bought XPS 8950 desktop. I bought two monitors with it: P2723DE and C2723H. I have been able to run C2723H via a display cable. But when connecting the second monitor (P2723DE) via display cable it keeps searching for the signal and eventually fails to detect the signal. The same port on the back of the desktop works well with other monitor. I have changed/swapped the cables. Today I called Dell Tech support. They mentioned that XPS Desktop will be able to send signals to one monitor only through a display cable. If I want to use a second monitor, I will have to use HDMI. It didn't make sense to me. I would like to have your opinion. Thanks.

Hi njc2022,
I think you have just the right amount of information provided, you just need the right help. The P2723DE is MST (Multi-Stream Transport) enabled and the C2723H is not. But no need to fear, according to Dell, MST will work on non-MST monitors as long as the non-MST monitor is at the end of the daisy chain. You will only need 1 DisplayPort on your computer to get this working, so no discrete or extra video card is needed. The XPS 8950 has a DisplayPort 1.4, so you already have everything you need to get this working.
Since these are new, I will assume all of your cables and wires are good.
First, please make sure you are using the DisplayPort cables that were included with the monitors (per Dell's recommendation) and make sure they are properly connected in a daisy chain. If you are sure you have already connected both correctly, move on to the Second step.
1. Connect a DisplayPort cable from the back of your PC's DisplayPort port into the "Input" DisplayPort port of the P2723DE monitor.
2. Connect a DisplayPort cable from the "Output" DisplayPort port of the P2723DE Monitor into the DisplayPort port of the C2723H monitor.
Second, on both monitors, select DisplayPort as the input and configure it correctly.
1. On both monitors, press the input button to set it to DP or DisplayPort. You can do this in the Menu as well.
2. Click on the menu button of each monitors, navigate to Display Settings, go to DisplayPort 1.2 and select Enable. (it is set to Disabled by default.)
If you see an option to select a different version of DisplayPort such as 1.4 or 1.1 do not select those, be sure to select 1.2. I have seen this issue myself, and selecting 1.4 or 1.1 causes issues.
Your monitors should now be working. You just need to change the settings of your monitors by right clicking on the desktop, and then clicking on Display Settings. You can find lots of video online on how to change the monitor settings.
Hope that helped.

We need more data. Click the DELL-Cares username. Send them a private message with the private XPS 8950 Service Tag.

@njc2002 I believe we need a better description of your XPS 8950. Do you have a discrete graphics card? I don't understand how you can have two DisplayPort outputs if you don't have a discrete graphics card since the XPS 8950 only has a single DisplayPort output associated with the integrated Intel graphics. See the Setup and Specifications manual here: https://objects.icecat.biz/objects/mmo_96245425_1640629535_9062_39.pdf

@theory916 According to the C2723H User's Guide it is also MST capable. In the OP's post, it is not clear to me how the second monitor is connected.

@njc2002 Your picture shows only one DisplayPort cable connected to your graphics card. If connecting both monitors to your GeForce 3080 graphics card solved your problem please mark this thread as solved.

Hello Vic384,
Thank you for your reply. My XPS 8950 (998-FKGZ) has NVIDIA(R) GeForce RTX(TM) 3080 10GB (LHR). It has 4 display ports as marked in the accompanying image. For setting up this PC I have tried all these ports and they seem to work. Thanks

Hello theory916,
Thank you for the detailed reply. The two monitors are connected as you have mentioned and they are working via DP cable.
You mentioned -. Click on the menu button of each monitor
, navigate to Display Settings, go to DisplayPort 1.2 and select Enable. (it is set to Disabled by default.) >> I couldn't locate the option to enable DisplayPort 1.2. Please see the image of OSD. Neither I could see that option on my desktop display setting.
Despite they seem to be working find. What would you suggest?
Thanks

Trying hard to understand...
If you're trying to use one of the four DP ports on the add-in NVidia card and the onboard Intel Graphics DP port that's circled at top of your picture (directly below the six audio ports) for a second monitor, you need to enable the Multi-Display option in BIOS setup. And set the Primary Display option to NVidia in BIOS setup too.
Make both changes with only a monitor connected to the NVidia card. Then power off, and plug a second monitor into the onboard Intel DP port and reboot the PC...
