XPS 8950: CPU runs hot when gaming. Am I safe?

XPS 8950

XPS 8950

My brand new XPS 8950's CPU is running quite hot under fairly minimal loads when gaming. According to MSI Afterburner, my CPU load sits around 30 percent in demanding games.

When playing Warzone with 110 FPS on Ultra graphics settings, the CPU is running in the mid 80s C. Valorant at 120 FPS with graphics setting maxxed puts my CPU temp in the mid to high 70s. Mount and Blade 2 Bannerlord on high graphics settings at 60 fps runs at 85 C in battles and 70s C out of battle.

Are these safe temps to be at while gaming for several hours at a time? Gaming is the most intensive thing I do on the machine. I know the stock fan on this PC has been widely panned,  but I'm hesitant to install a new one unless absolutey necessary.

My specs:

Intel Core i7 12th Gen 12700 2.10GHz Processor

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060

32GB DDR5-4400 RAM

I ran into the same thermal issues on the XPS 8950. I purchased the Dell premium air cooler from the big online store. The Dell premium air cooler significantly lowered my cpu temps at 100% load as well as at idle. Using the Dell premium cooler also avoided the fan errors during boot. Simple swap. I am pleased with the result. I hope this helps.

I would order the Dell premium Air Cooler that came with the "K" series CPU. You could also try to get the Dell AIO liquid cooler that was an option for for the 8950 with the "K" series CPU. While the CPU is hot it shouldn't be throttling. More case fans/ better ventilation would be another way to try to bring those temps down.

Reddit opinion on this question: Is it ok for i7 12700 to run 70-80 temp while gaming ?

Perfectly safe and normal for the stock cooler and 12700.

Running your CPU near its max temperature for long periods will affect its performance and may shorten its lifespan. Once most CPUs hit 90 to 100°C, they will begin throttling (lowering their clock speeds) to avoid overheating. If temperatures rise further, the CPU will shut itself down to avoid permanent damage.

T junction (max T) for i7-12700 is 100C.

It's hot. Download Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and run the 5 minute CPU stress test. In the bottom right corner of the screen you will be able to see what, if anything, is throttling your CPU.

This worked wonderfully! Thank you for the suggestion. The fan was a bit expensive on ebay -- about $80 with free shipping -- but the performance boost is night and day. The install was easy for a beginner and my CPU temps are practically half what they were with the stock fan. Thanks for this solution and I'd highly recommend it to others.
