XPS 8940, can I upgrade my i9-11900 CPU?

XPS 8940

XPS 8940

I am currently rocking the i9-11900 and I was wondering if I could upgrade it to the i9-13th gen processor.

What are the pros and cons?

Is it possible?

Thanks!!

Cannot be done as the CPUs have completely different sockets. The 11th gen is 1200 and the 13th gen is 1700.

The best you could do is the I9 11900k, but if you have the 11700k it wouldn't be worth it that much to upgrade. Secondly, since overclocking is not doable on a stock Dell motherboard.

@JamieLinux I agree inasmuch as the system already has an i9-11900 there is no reason to try a K version. The difference is very slight and unusable for the OC restriction that you pointed out (I am not a fan of OC at all).

8940 cpu can not be upgraded beyond 10/11th gen as already discussed.   Dell wants you to buy a whole new pc xps 8950 for 12th gen or 8960 for 13th gen.  neither 8950 nor 8960 mobo can be swapped in 8940 case, as everything is proprietary: form factor of mobo, psu pinout, psu form factor.  sell your 8940 if you are done w it and use the profit to defray the cost of a new Dell pc if you are a xps loyal customer.  I would not buy any of these proprietary non-upgradable prebuilt.

@JamieLinux   regarding this 'overclocking is not doable' . . . are you referring specifically to the XPS 8940?

@ProfessorW00d No any Dell PC as overclocking is locked out, the best you can do is set the turbo timer to infinity through the Intel Tuning tool and maybe adjust a few of the frequencies with Throttle stop, but alas you won't be able to undervolt and other things.

@ProfessorW00d What Dell series PC is that because the xps line doesn't have XMP support.

@JamieLinux   Alienware Area-51 R5 . . . I think the Aurora Series also has CPU overclocking and XMP up through the Aurora R12, at least.

@ProfessorW00d interesting that they have it on the 8930 but removed it on the 8940
