XPS 8940, adding 32GB ram

Hi,

trying to add 2 * 16Gb Crucial Ram to my XPS 8940.

Came with 8gb Ram in one slot.

Have tried every combination of slots and memory and won't post.

Anyone got a combo that works?

If you have tried every combination of slots and system wouldn't POST, there could be issue with using incompatible RAM.

These are tested and validated memory to work with XPS 8940:

732YD 32GB DDR4, 3200MHz, 2Rx8, Unbuffered, 288 pin, Dual Rank, 1.2V, Non-ECC, Non-Encrypted, Hynix HMAA4GU6AJR8N-XN/HMAA4GU6CJR8N-XN, Micron MTA16ATF4G64AZ-3G2B1/MTA16ATF4G64AZ-3G2E1, Samsung M378A4G43AB2-CWE

C5N22 16GB DDR4, 3200MHz, 2Gx64, 2RX8, Unbuffered, 288 pin, Dual Rank, 1.2V, Non-ECC, Non-Encrypted, Adata AO2P32NCST2-BZ7SHD, Hynix HMA82GU6DJR8N-XN, Kingston KC5N22-HYD/KC5N22-MIE, Micron MTA16ATF2G64AZ-3G2J1, Samsung M378A2K43EB1-CWE

V0M5R 8GB DDR4, 3200MHz, 1Gx64, 1RX8, Unbuffered, 288 pin, Single Rank, 1.2V, Non-ECC, Non-Encrypted, Adata AO2P32NC8T1-BZ5SHD, Hynix HMA81GU6CJR8N-XN/HMA81GU6DJR8N-XN, Kingston KV0M5R-HYD/KV0M5R-MIE, Micron MTA8ATF1G64AZ-3G2J1, Samsung M378A1K43EB2-CWE

36FTX 4GB DDR4, 3200MHz, 512x64, 1RX16, Unbuffered, 288 pin, Single Rank, 1.2V, Non-ECC, Non-Encrypted, Adata AO2P32NC4U1-BZNSHD, Hynix HMA851U6DJR6N-XN, Kingston K36FTX-MIE, Micron MTA4ATF51264AZ-3G2J1, Samsung M378A5244CB0-CWE

As mentioned, if OP already tried every combination of slots, the issue could be with incompatible RAM.  Could that be XMP RAM were used?  Crucial accepts return as part of their guarantee pledge.

In addition to validated memory with Dell part numbers, what to expect when using DDR4 memory with 3200 MHz, the memory speed is limited to 2666 MHz with Intel Core 10th gen i3/i5 processors.  And, the memory speed is limited to 2933 MHz with i7/i9 processors.

There are some exceptions with users validated working configurations.  Mixed RAM brands might work, mixed slots might work (each pair be installed on different clip color slots), and mixed capacity might work.

Besides memory upgrade, other hardware specifications for XPS 8940 can be viewed here  https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/xps-desktops/faq-xps-8940/647f8b92f4ccf8a8debaa59c

@Chris Pawley,

Don't know 'why' this is solved?

No answer by you on what you did?

I did the same on my 8940, came with only 16GB's in 1 stick... Got 2 Crucial 16GB sticks and and exchanged them in the same set slots.

Slots are critical here:

Slot selection is the key, same set. I assume that is what you did?

Yes this is what I tried and didn't work. So have decided to use the list of tested and validated dimms above and try them instead.

@Chris Pawley

So have you gotten those RAM sticks and it DOES work? If NOT, then unmark the solution I would think is best done? You never claimed it was 'solved' though.

Crucial RAM should work. Make sure you got the correct Crucial RAM sticks though. They have a scanner you run on your PC, https://www.crucial.com/store/systemscanner and it opens a web page with the results. Suggest buying a MATCHED PAIR though, less likely to have a problem. Can usually get them on Amazon and now have to pay shipping if you are a Member.

Hmm, web page never updates for me?

Can also do it on Crucial's site, https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/dell/xps-8940 and they only have a single 32GB (2x16GB's) available:

You DID remove the old 8GB RAM stick, right? 40GB's of RAM is 'not' a supported configuration.

======================

Memory configurations supported
  • 8 GB, 2 x 4 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM, dual-channel
  • 8 GB, 1 x 8 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM
  • 16 GB, 2 x 8 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM, dual-channel
  • 16 GB, 1 x 16 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM
  • 32 GB, 1 x 32 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM
  • 32 GB, 2 x 16 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM, dual-channel
  • 64 GB, 2 x 32 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM, dual-channel
  • 64 GB, 4 x 16 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM, dual-channel
  • 128 GB, 4 x 32 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM, dual-channel

Glad to hear that the memory upgrade went well for you and thanks for reporting back as it will help other users with the same inquiry.

I configured mine to 32 GB by adding 2 16GB sticks to the White Ram Slots, Slots 2 and 4.

White refers to the clips on the ends of the slots.
