XPS 8930, cannot plug in optical drive power plug
Hello, (a) In my XPS-8930 tower, I unplugged the power cable and the data cable to the optical drive. (b) Unplugging the power cable was very difficult and afterwards I could not plug it back into the drive. (c) The pins in the socket in the drive are tiny and very difficult to align and after working with it for several hours I broke two of the pins. (d) I would like to have an optical drive in this system. (e) Solutions?

Since the pins are broken on the ODD (optical disk drive), you will have to replace it. On the ODD label, do you see a Dell 5 digit part number? Like in this example of the tray style ODD, the Dell 5 digit part number is PNDVV =

Thanks! I will find the part number and follow up with Dell. Replacement seems to be only $35.00 or so.

Hello,
a) Can someone tell me which DVD/CD RW drive I should buy today (08/16/2025) to replace the DVD/CD RW drive in my XPS-8930 desktop tower (bought new on 01/10/2019)? I have talked to Dell Sales but they do not seem very sure.

c) Description of the drive that I want to replace:
(1) This is a thin drive that sits horizontally and that slides into the front of the desktop through a metal sleeve inside the cabinet until it snaps in. The front face of the drive is approximately 5.25" x 0.4". There is a small horizontal black plastic plate that snaps on the front of the drive and that matches the color the desktop cabinet. When you open the drive a horizontal tray pops out; you can drop a CD or DVD flat into the drive and push the drive closed.
(2) As described in the original order information:
"429-AAJV Tray load DVD Drive (Reads and Writes to DVD/CD)"
(3) As described in the information printed on the back of the drive:
[Hitachi] Super Multi DVD Writer
KCC-REM-HLD-GU90N
MODEL: GU90N

d) I found two possible replacement drives on the Dell Accessories web site. Both drives are said to be compatible with the XPS-8930, and both drives are said (the language is ambiguous) to support both CD R/W and DVD R/W. But I cannot tell the difference between the two drives, nor which one is appropriate for my system.

I have talked to Dell Sales, but I have not gotten a detailed reply.
e) Thank you for any assistance!
