Dell Latitude D531 and Windows 7

Hi,

I have a Latitude D531 with Windows XP and was wondering if I can install Windows 7 into it. If so, can I purchase installation DVD from Dell for it?

Thank you

You can purchase a Windows 7 Upgrade DVD from Dell (Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate) or amazon or any local computer store.

The Latitude D Series are Windows Vista compatible and so have Windows Vista Drivers which can be used in conjunction with Windows 7.

Before upgrading to Windows 7 you may want to consider a few things:

• Memory, upgrade to 4 GB for best performance here (run the crucial scan to see how much you already have). I wouldn't stick Windows 7 on it if you have less than 2 GB, it will still run at 1 GB but not as well.

• 64 bit or 32 bit, you will need to run the upgrade advisor to check if the system is 64 bit compatible.

For installing Windows 7, I refer you to my wiki A Clean Install of Windows, it will take you through the installation procedure step by step. If you have the bluetooth module, use the Windows 7 Bluetooth Driver R231570 (don't install the Vista driver for Bluetooth).

You should run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor tool.

It isn't necessary to buy Windows 7 from Dell. Newegg is a good vendor.

Note that you will need to do a clean install of Windows 7 so back up your data.

yes, you sure can install W7 in your latitude. But i think that Dell is giving W7 only with Systems. They don't sell OS as itself.

You can buy W7 from The Microsoft website http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/default.aspx

If you are using it for business purpose try W7 Professional or Ultimate or Enterprise (in ultimate and Enterprise you can encrypt and lock your local disks using Bit-locker application)

If it's for home use try W7 home basic or home premium

I;m in the same position, D531, WIndows 7 64 bit, need Bluetooth driver.  I tried R231570 but partway through installing it, a Windows popup says says "This Program has compaatibility issues......."  and directs me to Toshiba's website where of course I can't find anythig helpful.

Advice please?

This driver doesn't have compatibility issues with Windows 7 32 or 64 bit. It should work fine with the Latitude D531.

Thanks Philip. In fact it (R231570) seems to be working fine, despite the Windows warning popup.

Glad you got it working okay. Not sure why you got the warning.

I have tried to find this posting on the clean install since I have bought a Latitude D531 that I want to use as a laptop to finally convert my album collection to digital.  It has 160Gb HD and 4Gb of memory already, so I wanted to upgrade to Windows 7 (now that I have been using that on both my home and work computers for a while)  before I started my process.

Any idea why it not available anymore?  Thank you for your time and excellent knowledge resource.

The guide has been migrated to my own personal blog. It is stated as an unofficial guide as people were confusing it with official Dell content and unfortunately some of the forum Rockstars and Microsoft MVPS didn't approve with some sections of it. I have combined it with many other guides of mine in a single document making it easier both to write and for others to find the relevant information:

http://philipyip.wordpress.com/dell-community-forums/

You may download it in pdf or word format.

Since you are looking at a Latitude D531 and Windows 7 installation and Dell don't provide a Windows 7 driver set for this model see the unofficial drivers section on the blog also which cover Windows 7 64 Bit and Windows 7 32 Bit on the Latitude D531.
