@Guiks Yes, I was able to use AOMEI Partition Assistant to increase the size of the 100 MB partition containing the BIOS info. Do not attempt this without first backing up the entire hard disk (not just the C drive) in case disaster ensues. Install software, run program, right click on C drive and Move and Resize Partition. Click box "I need to move this partition". Click on small blue box at beginning of C drive, hold down mouse key while moving slightly to the right and release. You only need a few hundred MB of space (400-600 is fine). Click Apply button in upper left corner. It takes a while to do this job so sit back. If there is a 16 MB partition saying Microsoft reserved between the new 400-600 MB partition and the C drive, you can delete it. Right click it, select delete, and then click apply button. Now you have either 1 or two empty partitions to the right of 100 MB BIOS partition. Right click on 100 MB BIOS partition and select Resize/Move partition. Click on blue box at end of partition and drag all the way over to the right. Click apply. Repeat if there is a second empty partition between 100 MB BIOS partition and C drive partition. Reboot. And then run BIOS update.

And why is this new BIOS so drastically smaller than previous releases (8MB vs. 27 MB)?

@HoustonAstro Thanks. This solved my problem I deleted the '16 MB partition saying Microsoft reserved' and that fortunately was enough to update successfully without resizing the c drive.
If I'm correct i might have been able to use diskpart to do that. but I did use the 'AOMEI Partition Assistant' App
admittedly without doing research. but had no issues.

@HoustonAstro I must be mistaken, I followed all your steps and still recieve the same error while trying to install BIOS update. I can't figure out what I did wrong, provided screenshot shows that there's space left in BIOS partition but it seems that the update can't be installed, any information ?

Do I need to purchase the software to do this?  I can't seem to get the Update button to activate.

Another way to update BIOS is to download the .rcv file. This is the BIOS recovery file. To download this, don't click the download link, click the little carrot arrow next to the link and when the drop down appears, click on "other formats". Click on the download for that.

Put the .rcv file on a thumb drive formatted with FAT32 file system. Insert it into a USB port. Shut down computer. Start computer and constantly push down on Ctl and ESC repeatedly until you get a monochrome screen prompting you to recover your BIOS. You will need to navigate the screen using the spacebar and arrow keys. Use spacebar to select (put an X inside) the [  ] brackets. I don't have the graphic in front of me but after that you need to get down to the NEXT button and hit ENTER (I think). The 'puter will update the BIOS. Let it do its thing and you'll be good.

It turns out my USB ports are not working I get the following error

We are starting the think we need a new computer even though this one is only 2 years old.  The camera isn't working and now the USB drives.  Microsoft updates are not working and the bios is out of date.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Perhaps this is the wrong thread for this request.  Please let me know.

The update never finished.  We have ordered an adaptor so we can plug the hard drive into another computer and try repartioning and installing.  Hoping to get the laptop working again as it is only 2 years old!
