VxRail vCenter Server( or internal” or “embedded”) for stretched cluster
Hi Experts,
As fro the , https://www.emc.com/collateral/guide/h15844-vxrail-4-0-vcenter-server-pg.pdf, on page 7, it states that :
A Customer Supplied vCenter Server solution is required when:
- Stretched clusters is part of the solution.
So does that mean the VxRail supplied vCenter Server is not supported by Stretched clusters? and why is that? if we must use a customer supplied vCenter Server, how can we protect it from site failure? use another stretched cluster? that just sounds stupid...
Regards.
Johnson

When configuring stretched cluster, it can ONLY be configured with a customer supplied external VC. The VC CANNOT be hosted on the VxRail. That would break the LCM affinity rules.

Thanks Bill. So what exactly are the LCM affinity rules?

Hi Bill,
Do you have any information if the external vCenter with this stretched cluster are able to run on the VxRail nodes itself?
I just had an implementation for stretched cluster, VMware folks said it is ok to run vcenter on top of the VSAN node (for them VxRail is considered as a VSAN Node)
Engineering said not supported, but if customer have to have external vcenter, then they may need additional hardware and shared storage to protect their external vcenter, which may defeat of purpose having HCI

Hi Johnson,
if you are DellEMC employee, then please ensure you are submitting the RPQ as part of the process for any VxRail stretched cluster requirements and also understand the supported deployment type with VxRail for stretched cluster.
if you are not DellEMC employee, please get the help from the SE supporting your customer.

Do you know if it will change with vxrail 4.5?
because it's a pain to have a "dedicated" infrastructure only for the vcenter

I read quite a bit on 4.5, but the external vcenter is still mandatory for 4.5/stretched cluster.

Too bad. I don't really care about the external vcenter. But i don't really understand why the vcenter couldn't be on the stretched vxrail.

Hi Bill. Just wondering if you know if you can now with VxRail 4.7 host your customer supplied vCenter inside VxRail cluster in a stretched cluster configuration. Have you come across this one by any chance?
Cheers
