Programm is starting slow within vWorkspace full desktop

Hi there,

we found an issue regarding vWorkspace 8.0 on Windows Server 2008 R2 RDSH (German OS installation) in conjunction with the Software of the DATEV eG. The whole DATEV environment running well beside of one Application that is called LOVOR. If you start this within a vWorkspace full desktop sessions w/o any optimization enabled than it needs several minutes to appear on the users or admins screen. If you logon to the same server with the same user or admin profile via the std. MS RDP client from Windows XP or Windows 7 LOVOR is starting wihtin a few seconds.

Any ideas how to work on this issue?

Thanks in adv.,

Holger

Hi Holger,

That sounds interesting. The vWorkspace hook DLLs would be loaded in both scenarios, with the main apparent difference being that the shell launched on login is pnstart.exe, followed by explorer.exe instead of simply explorer.exe.

What I'd do in your situation is first disable the hook DLLs. Run regedit, go to HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows, and change the LoadAppInit_DLLs value to 0 (zero). Put it back to 1 when you've finished testing.

Test the application startup time in both login scenarios. My guess is they will both be fast, but if not, this could get very interesting.

Hi Rick,

thanks for your help and my greetings to Australia! I remember that I enjoyed my time in Australia in 2008 a lot. Myself just relocated back from China to Germany, so again I am VERY far from you

We just had the chance to do the needed testing regarding your suggestion above.

We set the value of LoadAppInit_DLLs from 1 to 0 on one of the RDSHs, restarted the VM and tested with the MS RDP client as well as with the vWorkspace Connector (we used the remote desktop connection with a direct connection to this RDSH, not the AppPortal).

Interesting for you will be that there nothing changed with the difference in the starting performance of this application within the published full desktop. All other applications that are in use do not have any difference in performance. All of them are fast.

Followed we set the value back from 1 to 0 and restarted the VM again.

Regards,

Holger

Hi Holger,

THank you. I was born in Germany, grew up in Canada and now live in Australia. But Germany is a long way away.

Excluding the hook DLLs alse excludes quite a lot of the vWorkspace component functionality from consideration.

So what do we have left? A slight difference in virtual channels (vWorkspace has more) and a different mode of shell startup pnstart > explorer.exe which "shouldn't" make a difference. It could be that there is a difference in which virtual channels are enabled or all sorts of interesting stuff.

But something obviously does have an effect and I'd love to find out what it is.

The reason I suggested the hook DLLs first is probably a leftover from my Citrix days when you could blame the Citrix hook DLLs for all the odd things that were happening

What I'd like to suggest is that you contact me directly (rick.mack@software.dell.com) and we organise some way for me to have a look at this application. I think we can probably sort it out fairly quickly once I've had a chance to see what's happening.

regards,

Rick
