Vostro 7510 - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 laptop GPU and G-SYNC on external display
Issue: No G-SYNC on Vostro 7510 for external display
Specs:
- Dell Vostro 7510 - Intel i7-11800H
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 laptop GPU, 4GB
- 16 GB RAM
- Windows 11
- Connected via the USB-C/Thunderbolt port is a Samsung Odyssey G7 27" curved monitor connected via DisplayPort, bought a special cable to support the high refresh rate - 244 Hz.
Details:
The monitor is a certified NVIDIA G-SYNC monitor. All of the settings for G-SYNC are missing from the NVIDIA control panel. (See screenshot) I have tried the Dell OEM driver, as well as the newer driver direct from NVIDIA with the same issue doing a clean install each time. When comparing to the NVIDIA website, this model says it is capable of G-SYNC: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/gaming-laptops/compare
In checking the PhysX config in the NVIDIA control panel, it seems that the external display is being routed via the Intel UHD. The only game I really play is Forza Horizon/Motorsport. I can turn on HDR, and get around 80 FPS. There is a software option within the game for "Vertical Sync." There is an option on the monitor OSD for "Adaptive Sync." I realize the laptop screen would not be capable of G-SYNC, however, this seems crazy and there is no mention on the specs for the laptop that is is NOT G-SYNC capable for a very capable external Samsung display. When I shopped the laptop, a quick scan of the NVIDIA website shows it is compatible, hence the purchase of the monitor to match ($550). This does not seem right.
PhysX Config:
Dell Specs:
Is there any setting that can be changed to allow G-SYNC to work on the external Samsung monitor within Windows, drivers, the BIOS, etc.?
Thanks!

The answer is no - there is no way to use GSync or to have the nVidia GPU drive the external output (or the internal one). The system is software-controlled and only the Intel GPU has a physical connection to the display panel and external monitors.
There are systems that do allow direct connection to the nVidia GPU -- the XPS 17 with an RTX GPU does, as do many Alienware systems and some Precision models. The Inspiron, Vostro and and most of the other XPS models do not.

Thanks for the information.
I am communicating with technical support via private message for the past hour or so as they messaged about this post. After sending several messages, why did they not tell me this up front? I realize the Vostro is not a "gaming system", however, I think this should be made more clear. Anyone that purchases a laptop with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX card, would reasonably expect to play a game on the system. Sync in any game is a key feature, even if the 3050 is at the "low" end of the cards.

You won't find GSync support at this price point in the market -- that's still the province of gaming systems, and even there it's a feature you find at the $1,500-2,000+ level -- not in a $1,000 system designed as a mid-range business notebook.

Perhaps this is true, however, the documentation on the NVIDIA website for the GeForce RTX 3050 laptop clearly states it is compatible with the technology. If the card cannot provide the expected feature, the documentation should be corrected/updated to clearly state this. The is a sub-note in super fine print a the end of the chart to check with the manufacturer of the laptop for specific features, however, even tech support took all afternoon to arrive at this conclusion. This is clear as mud and very frustrating. Here are the challenges:
1. The website says it is compatible:
2. The specs for the laptop say nothing about GSYNC NOT being supported, it simply says that it has the referenced GPU.
3. I was informed that it would not work by a community member, in conflict with the troubleshooting that technical support provided as they initially believed that it should work.
4. Dell Technical Support sent many private messages that took ALL AFTERNOON to come to this conclusion that it is not supported.
How many hours should I spend prior to make the purchase or in this case after the purchase to find out it is not compatible? This is a waste of everyone's time. In the end, this is for one game, and the game plays well enough and I'm not playing any other games on the system. Where is this documented or where is the source of truth? An end user should not have to spend 3 hours and troubleshooting with support to determine the answer to a question like this. I even pointed our your response and they did not accept it until some time later. The support provided is conflicting and confusing when two different sources go down two different paths. I rate this a 1 out of 10 for customer service.
I should be able to reference a simple chart to find out answers to basic questions if the laptop supports a function or not.
With this being said I do enjoy the laptop for all the other purposes that I use it for.
Thank you.

I complete agree with RacerKen111. It is absolutely terrible that Dell do not state anywhere that the Vostro/Inspiron 7510 does not connect NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 to any of its external graphics ports. You would expect this! The analogy is buying a car and finding out there is no connection between the motor and the wheels! Dealing with Dell is TERRIBLE. The Indian call centre is rubbish. They either are incompetent or out right lie about issues.

Given that the Vostro / Inspiron 7510 shares the BIOS with the Inspiron 7610, there is a reasonable chance that both systems are structurally identical.
If these systems are structurally identical, I can report that on the Inspiron 7610 with RTX 3060 the Nvidia GPU is (only) wired to the USB-C / Thunderbolt output port - and the Intel GPU is (only) wired to the HDMI output port.
I am unable to make any statements on G-Sync, as I am unable to test this.
I believe that Dell first-level support does not have any malicious intent; they are, most likely, just woefully under-equipped and their ability to provide support is limited to the "where is the power button" kind of request.
That being said, I am totally unhappy with Dell first-level support, as I appear to have no means to escalate my highly technical problem to a level which might actually be enabled to address it (firmware / BIOS defects)

I'm not an expert of laptops, but try disabling the laptop screen and make the monitor as your main screen.

Well said!! Not only it's quite useless it increases the cost, increases the weight and makes the machine run very hot! I think the designer of this model needs to take some basic course in a "design" related program.
