Vostro 15 3530, BIOS 1.27.0, fan control is broken

Hello, I'm experiencing some problems after 1.27.0 BIOS upgrade. Processor fan is turning on much later, so I hit some really high temperatures, and once it's on, it doesn't turns off, it runs on highest speed.

I tried some drivers reinstalling, but had no success, and I also couldn't downgrade BIOS due to security ban.

Laptop is Vostro 15 3530 with i3-1305u. Vents are clean and thermal paste is replaced maybe a month ago.

Hi everyone,

Dell has released a new BIOS version 1.30.0 that addresses an issue where the system fan may not operate correctly after a previous BIOS update.

Please install this BIOS update and let us know if it resolves the issue on your system.

Compatible systems:

  • Inspiron 15 3530
  • Vostro 14 3430
  • Vostro 15 3530

Your feedback is important and helps other users facing the same problem.

I've just managed to downgrade bios to 1.24.1. Earlier today, tech support from GHN installed me remotely some pre-release bios version (89.27.0), but all was the same as it was with 1.27.0. Later, I flashed 1.24.1 update and it downgraded that installed pre-release. However, windows update kept forcing 1.27.0 update again, so I just turned of "capsule bios upgrade" from UEFI settings, flashed pre-release, and then 1.24.1. Now everything works fine.

* Some users reported that downgrading the BIOS resolved the issue. If that does not fix it for you, then follow the steps below:

* Contact support via Get Help Now on right. This must be done to create a Dell case tied to the unique computer Service Tag number. For this specific issue, out of warranty customers will be assisted by the GHN technical support team.

* Push through the GHN AI questions until it sends you to a GHN agent.

* Once connected to the GHN agent, explain the issues you faced after installing BIOS 1.27.0. Ask the GHN agent to look up Dell article 000423130.

@P3rseus totally the same. I pick it up and and put a hand on the bottom vent, to see how hot it is, and fan turns on. I also use a stand with active cooler, that keeps it little colder. Also noticed that with time, SSD gets a bit hotter, sometimes even lagging the content on the screen.

Seems like we're stuck until the next BIOS upgrade, if it solves the problem at all.

@pweu823 I'm having the exact same problem with Inspiron 15 3530, and the worst part is I've already spoken to support and they ran several ridiculous tests and validated the machine as OK. Clearly the processor is overheating with the fan off after sleep mode.  Dell refuses to send a BIOS downgrade.

@user_3db5e1 they don't allow downgrade from 1.27.

@ShaiHullud Not for the end consumer, Dell has the capacity to provide a signed BIOS for downgrading in cases like this. But they refuse through all means of contact, and they don't take responsibility for the problem caused.

I would love to go back to the previous version but it blocks it even though downgrade is enabled in the BIOS. Support only had me test the hardware, they weren't interested for obvious reasons.

@P3rseus I spent hours with support, performing and collecting various useless tests. I have now filed and the proceedings will be conducted through this channel as Dell has no interest in resolving the problem by enabling this downgrade.

@P3rseus install HWMonitor and make screenshots or screenrecords for them to see the temps you get. Few minutes ago I copied some files from one partition to another, it went straigth to 100C for both performance and efficiency cores and stayed there till the end of copying. Of course, fan 'refused' to intervene, acted like it's dead...

@pweu823 From what I just saw, Dell has removed the faulty BIOS update 1.27.0. Let's hope they release a fix as soon as possible.
Mine too, it's directly impacting my work because I have to take my laptop to different places and constantly opening and closing it is part of my daily routine.

Now Dell has withdrawn the update but they could really allow a downgrade to the previous one

As stated in the title, after updating to the latest BIOS (version 1.27.0) for certificate updates, the fan on my Vostro 3530 no longer adjusts its speed based on system load or the selected power profile.

The problem manifests in two frustrating ways:

  1. If I start the laptop cold, the fan runs at a very low speed—or sometimes not at all—regardless of what I'm doing. This leads to rapid overheating and causes the processor to throttle down due to high temperatures, severely impacting performance.

  2. Conversely, if I restart the laptop while it's already hot, the fan gets stuck at maximum speed. It continues to run at full blast even after the system has cooled down significantly, creating unnecessary noise.

The most frustrating part is that Dell's BIOS seems to prevent downgrading to the previous, stable version.

Hi all,

We have shared this thread with the engineering team.

As a workaround for now, please downgrade the BIOS. Version 1.27.0 has been removed from the website.

You can visit your product support page to download and install the latest available BIOS version, v1.24.1.
