VNXE3200 - hot spare policy
We have an operational VNXe3200 with existing storage pools of 2.5" performance SAS drives. I recently installed a new shelf with 12 NL-SAS high capacity drives, with the intent of creating bulk storage in RAID 6. All hardware is properly recognized. When I try to add the new storage pool under RAID 6, it will not let me create a pool larger than 8+2 which would leave 2 extra drives unused (and wasted). I do NOT want hot spares because this is RAID 6. When I try to select RAID 6 10+2 it displays "not enough disks". HOWEVER, when I click the help button under hot spares policy, it SPECIFICALLY says: "If the system has only 12 disks in total, and they are of the same type, you may configure RAID 6 (10+2) with no hot spare.". So WHY can't I create a RAID6 with 12 disks when I have exactly 12 NL-SAS drives? This is really annoying. Why would the presence of SAS drives of different type affect the hot spare policy of NL SAS drives? How can I get around this so that I don't lose 4 terabytes of space? Why does EMC have to impose artificial restrictions on almost every possible operation within this thing?

Hi,
allowing no hotspare for configs with 12 disks in total is an exception in the code for very small configs.
total in this case counts all the drives installed in the system.- if you were to have only 14 drives it would also require a hot spare.
hotspare rules are enforced to avoid downtime on drive failure - there is no way to configure around them.
I would suggest to talk to the EMC/Partner that sold you the upgrade - he should have sized it including the necessary hot spare.
