VNX2 Unified Vault Drives
Hello,
As I know that the first 4 drives on the VNX Disk Enclosure (Disk 0-3) are reserved for the operating system of the storage array, & are called vault drives.
Is it fixed that the number of drives for vault drives on VNX (Unified, Block-Only, File-Only) is FOUR?
From the VNX capacity calculator the number is four for each vault drives I create.
However from EMC Channel Express I've noticed when choosing the vault drives, that it gives plenty of options for the Base Drive Configuration like:
- 12*2.5'' 10k 600GB
- 8*2.5'' 10k 600GB
- 4*2.5'' 10k 600GB + 8**2.5'' 1TB NL-SAS
Does it mean that 4 drives will be used for Vault & the remaining for Data (Raid Groups or Pools), or the number for vault drives can increase depending on the VNX model & type (Unified or not)
Thanks,

Correct – 4 vault drives required with VNX1/VNX2 – same config and size no matter what model

Hi,
in VNX and VNX2 ITS fixed on 4 drives ( 0-3 ). What you see in Channel Express is "only" Marketing/ or like a VNX starter Package with some disk....

Thank you Sebastian & Rainer for confirming the vault drives number for VNX1/VNX2 models.

In addition to the number, you should also consider the available user-space on vault drives. For each disk in the vault, ~300GB is used for the vault components, with the remaining available as user space if required.
That space is suited only to low performance ops and only for Raid Groups, not for Pools.
