VNX Lun filling up
Hi,
I have a simple question for you all, yesterday we got an issue with an operation done onto a lun provisioned from a VNX2. A lun has filled up because of an operation on a windows server.
Is there a way to have the VNX2 send or notify the administrator that a lun is getting full ? We know that it is possible at the pool level, but is it at the lun level ?
Thank you for your help,
Christian

That's not really possible. The VNX has no way to realistically track what's been written to the LUN then re-written. For example, I could have a Windows app that simply overwrote data on the LUN. From the VNX perspective, the LUN would always appear 100% allocated.
Let us know if that helps!

Hi Karl,
Thank you for your prompt answer. You go in the same direction as we were thinking, normally, it is at the OS level that lun alerting should be manage (Windows Log or VMware alerting).
We will look further to see if we could use reports from DPA to help customer on this side.
Have a nice day ahead,
Christian

Yes – for a thick LUN its always full from the VNX perspective
For a thin LUN you can monitor how much is allocated – but even then the VNX cannot differentiate what is used by the clients file systems or what are deleted blocks that aren’t reclaimed.
