firmware upgrade VNX5300

Hello
I need to do an update/upgrade of following components:

Control Station                                    7.1.79-8 --> 7.1.80.8

Data Mover (server_2/server_3):        T7.1.79.8 --> T7.1.80.8

Storage Processor (Flare version):      05.32.000.5.219 --> 05.32.000.5.221

1) Is a firmware update/upgrade possible without loosing or destroying existing data on the system?

2) Were can I find a procedure or description of needed update commands?
3) Which software (CD-, DVD-images or packages) must I download for this upgrade?

4) Can I do the update remotely via cli?

kind regards
Torsten

USM can also run the update if you do not have Internet access

you just need to save the upgrade files in the correct directory - see USM online help

Solve Desktop should also have instructions for CLI upgrade

On the VNX, upgrades are performed using the USM (Unisphere Service Manager). You can get the latest version on support.emc.com. You could use CLI commands, but USM is the recommended method.

In the On-Line Help search for NDU or None destructive Update. That will explain the process.

In most cases upgrades can be done on-line (depending on the workload running on the array - the lower the workload, the better). Each one of the upgrades - disk firmware (it;s not listed but you should probably upgrade at the same time), Control Station/Data Mover and FLARE will not result in data loss.

When you install USM, it will connect to support.emc.com and collect all the notices for different upgrades (in the lower left corner). From USM you log into the array and that allows USM to run a health check (lower right corner). The health check will provide information about any issues on the array and recommendation.

EMC has a Remote Upgrade group that can also help.

Also, you need to be aware that this may affect your hosts/switches - these should also be upgraded to match the versions running on the array. On support.emc.com you need to review the E-Lab compatibility section to ensure that all your hosts are up-to-date and running the correct software/drivers (HBA's, etc).

Hi Glen
thanks for the fast answer.
I am afraid I cannot use USM method, sonce we will not have Internet access onsite.
will try to search for NDU in Online-Help first.

Hi Thorsten,

You can download the software beforehand using USM (easiest) or directly from the support site.

And use USM offline when onsite, the upgrade process itself is pretty straightforward. For a unified system like yours it will take about 4 hours total.

Thank you atervoort.

Meanwhile I was able to start UMC on an online Computer in the same LAN as Control Station and I downloaded target Firmware.

But 2 Errors during healthcheck before OE file Installation occured:

1) check unique id

2) check slic signature

in both files for Slot_2 are missing lines like

uniqueid validate xxxx.xxxxx
and

slicsignature validate=517

I do not know the reason and before fixing these Errors i may not start update with UMS.

regards

Torsten
