Why can't I install the SRA Utilities for VSI on my vCenter server?

I don't want to install vSphere Client and run the VSI on my SRM server.  Is there a way to avoid that?

Does everyone here run it like that on your SRM server?

Generally speaking, Rafa is correct that VSI can be installed anywhere you have the vSphere Client installed.  But unfortunately that does not apply to the SRA Utilities feature.  The reason is that VSI - SRA Utilities needs to talk directly to the EMC SRDF SRA (and also write out some .xml options files), so they need to be co-located.  This is the reason why it must be run from the SRM Server.

Brandon, what is it that you'd like to be able to do from your client using SRA Utilities?

Hi Lee,

Thanks for the clarification. Reading the manual I understood that I need to install EMC SRDF Storage Replication Adapter on the same machine as the VSI, but for some reason i thought that this could be done in any machine. And maybe just copy XML files to the SRM server after changing it.

You can install the VSI anywhere you have vSphere Client Installed. This can be your vCenter server, your desktop, or any other server you want!

Thank Lee.

I missed that in the documentation.

That is true, but there is a chain of dependencies that must be satisfied.  For example, the SRDF SRA can only be installed if VMware SRM is installed.  So as you can see, it gets to be a bit much to install on a laptop.
