expanding a raid group with existing disks
i got some RGs that i would like to expand instead of creating a new raid group. The available disks are mix of sata and fc.
to expand the rg, I can just right click on the rg and go to disk and pick the disk i want then expand right?
Is there a problem with this or is there a better way?

SATA is slow plus your array could be busy with other more important things.

it is safe just watch the workload, if it starts impacting performance you can change down the priority.

do not mix FC and SATA in the same RG, if you add 2TB SATA drive to RG that consists of 600G FC drives ..you will only get 600G worth of capacity from the new drive.

I have a private lun on a rg. Is it ok to delete that?

16 drives per RG is max. Think about double drive failure, especially with big SATA drives. The more drives in the RAID group, the longer rebuild times, the more chances of double drive failure and data loss (i assume you are using RAID-5).

you can't, it could be part of a meta LUN, RLP ..etc

If I had a RG on bus2, enclosure 6 - disk 0-4
that has 5 luns on there
and I want to expand this RG with
bus 0, enclosure 6, disk 7-10
what will happen to the existing luns cuent on the RG? will the data start striping acoss all available buses and disks?

the existing RG is 4tb. what is the max RG size allowed? Also this is a sata 2 RG. Is it better to create a separate RG. sata2 is slow

definitely not mix SATA and FC drives in the same RG. What do you need extra storage for ? Is it for VM ?

maybe create a new raid group that consists of FC drives, create new datastore and storage vMotion some VMs over.
