Open Replicator HOT push from Vmax to Xtrem

Hi,

I am planning to use Open Replicator for moving few clustered servers from Vmax to Xtremio. I have not done hot push before, I have zoned 4 ports from vmax to xtrem. Now my concern is while creating the OR session should i select pre-copy, differential and consistent or can should i select only one of the options. Onemore question is should I set  ORS port ceiling % to the 4 ports I am using for migration. If anyone provide me the right way to use hot push that would be helpful .

  • I generally recommend planning on having your servers down for approximately 1 hour to complete the migration. Oftentimes it is quicker, but 1 hour is pretty safe.
  • I would generally set the ORS ceiling to 50% of available bandwidth. (If the VMAX pors being used are already heavily saturated, you may considering setting that ceiling even lower.)
  • The method you describe is correct.
  • The document I linked to is the only one that I am aware of that directly addresses the scenario you are asking about. If you are having trouble accessing it, please contact EMC support. (The title of the document is below, for reference)

If your goal is to simply migrate via a one-time cutover, then any of those options work. I generally will create the session with precopy and let the session get roughly in sync. Then I would take the host/cluster down and run the activate for the rest of the data to copy. Then you can terminate and bring up the host/cluster on the XtremIO.

Yes, I would suggest using a ceiling so that you do not saturate your FA ports.

Edit: There is actually a technote that describes this process. In the note they use differential, but the process is similar.

Hi KW,

Thanks for Response,

If I have to cutover the servers and activate OR session how much time(approx) it will take to complete(4 volumes of 150 GB each) So I can map volumes to server from XtremIO( How much time should servers be down). How much % should I set the ORS Ceil so it would not effect other hosts connected to those FA ports. After the data is moved to XtremIO I have to remove the volumes from Vmax Masking View and then login to XtremIO, unmap volume from Vmax IG and map to host directly am I correct or is their any other best way. Can you also provide any document related to this the link above is showing as unavailable.

Thanks

Tried to check out the link provided by KW160 but was asked to provide the login info.  If you are kind enough to provide some useful info, I would think that you want others visiting this website to consume it.  Is it possible for you to make it viewable for all the DECN members instead of just the privileged few?

This has been a recurring issue for me, not user friendly, and quite annoying.

when i do hot push, i set pace to 9 ..let it copy at the slowest speed possible. Then right before the cutover but before you active the session, i change pace to 0.  If you plan on doing a lot of migrations think about using dedicated FAs for OR ..it is very heavy on FA CPU utilization (not individual port utilization)
