Thanks for the response, masters! To add more detail:
ViPR supports commodity hardware as of the ViPR 2.0 release. Users can add the intelligence of ViPR to commodity drives. ViPR 2.0 is certified on HP SL4540 with several other commodity certifications planned.
ViPR enables customers to bring their own commodity hardware and run ViPR Services such as ViPR Object, ViPR Block, and ViPR HDFS. Customers benefit from both the low cost of commodity hardware while not compromising enterprise storage capabilities such as geo replication, data snapshots, and more. Customers can purchase their own hardware and switches, commodity servers, and deploy their own operating system images. ViPR adds value by simplifying management such as health monitoring, provisioning, and upgrade and patch management.
For more information, please refer to the publicly available "ViPR product documentation", including the articles about "understanding how data is protected in a single site by ViPR Commodity".
