How to config Fabric Manager in ViPR

Hi there,

I am working on a PoC project which will use ViPR to manage storage. I have installed ViPR appliance successfully and is able to login ViPR management page. I got trouble when I configured Fabric Manager.

From the page there are two types of devices Brocade and Cisco are supported now, while unfortunately we only have a IBM DS5100 to connect to VNX and Host. My questions are:

1. Whether only Brocade and Cisco are supported in ViPR?

2. For IBM DS5100, I have gone through the CMCNE doc, can CMCNE help ViPR to connect to DS5100? If it can, how to config in Fabric Manager page? And how to configure CMCNE? In fact I have downloaded CMCNE 12.1.2 and installed in a Windows box with SMI agent only mode and not sure whether my installation is right.

3. And if CMCNE will work, it requires a license, how can I get a trial license? We have no budget to buy CMCNE license until the PoC is proved successful.

Thanks a lot for your time and help.

Hi Jeffrey.

1. Whether only Brocade and Cisco are supported in ViPR?

Correct detailed on page 5 & 6 of the ViPR Data Sheet and Compatibility Matrix are the supported models  https://support.emc.com/docu49617_ViPR-1.0-Data-Sheet-and-Compatibility-Matrix.pdf?language=en_US

The ViPR UI would have given an error when trying to discover unsupported models or firmware

Unless the IBM DS5100 is a rebranded Brocade switch I cannot see how CMCNE will support it for discovery.

It does not list the IBM DS5100 switch as supported in the CMCNE release notes but does list a brocade DS5100b switch

Review Pages 41 to 45 https://support.emc.com/docu51087_Connectrix-Manager-Converged-Network-Edition-12.1.2-Release-Notes.pdf?language=en_US for switch platform and firmware requirements that are supported with CMCNE.

Pages 481 to 500 has the details on for the SMI Agent Configuration Tool along with discovering the fabrics of supported switches

https://support.emc.com/docu51074_Connectrix-Manager-Data-Center-Edition-Professional,-Professional-Plus,-and-Enterprise-12.1.2-User-Guide.pdf?language=en_US

3. And if CMCNE will work, it requires a license, how can I get a trial license? We have no budget to buy CMCNE license until the PoC is proved successful.

The full version of CMCNE requires a license. But CMCNE can be installed and setup to run without a license for the Integrated SMI Agent. When asked to Choose the appropriate edition to install Select the SMI Agent only option this way no license is required. Which would have done for your PoC if the switch was supported
