Screen adjustment/ font size etc.

OK folks what is the secret with the DVP8 ?

I had been using an ASUS eeePC for years as my road warrior.

I figured I would buy the DVP8 because it was lighter than the eeePC, had an 8" screen as opposed to a 7" screen, was much faster than the eeePC and had the latest Win system (8.1 versus XP).

So what's then problem?

Now that I'm on the road, everything sucks!

My two key apps (Firefox and Sunbird calendar) don't display their screens to adjust naturally the way my eeePC did.

I am forced to scroll right to left with the DVP8 where the eeePC fit everything on the screen perfectly.

Sunbird calendar doesn't display appointments to fit. The fonts are way too large. I didn't have to make any adjustment with the eeePC in this regard.

On the DVP8 I don't even know how to adjust for just one or two apps (not the overall system).

Any suggestions here?

TIA

Did the tablet always have this problem out of the box? If not when do you remember the problem starting? Was any changes made to the system display or fonts just prior to when you noticed the problem? Was any applications or utilities installed just prior to when the problem started?

If the tablet is set to its native resolution (1280 x 800) the tablet should keep orientation and not make you scroll from one side to the other for most programs and utilities.

Changing the resolution from the native resolution on the display can possibly cause the image to not be fully shown on the screen requiring scrolling.  When in display properties / change resolution / the native resolution will be shown by listed as "recommended".

From the same screen you can click "Make text and other items larger or smaller" if text is too small, It is possible that increasing the text larger to make it easier to read, can fill up the screen and cause you to scroll to see the entire page.

There is also the magnifying option that a number of the folks mentioned in the thread that I pointed out above, It allows you to keep the resolution and text size unchanged, and just increases the size of the area that you are viewing with the magnifier.

I know that you have been used to your Asus Device, I apologize for not being more familiar with it than I am, but it is possible that the problem lies with the Venue having an 8 inch screen with the native resolution of 1280 by 800.   I don’t think that there are any hardware failures here but I will send you a friend request in case you continue to have difficulties with the tablet.

Thanks for helping out Terry.

I am familiar with the threads/articles you have mentioned.

What I am looking for is a solution where the system/programs recognize the screen size AND orientation (I am constantly going from portrait to landscape and back) and adjusts the screen to fit all the text WITHOUT needing to scroll to the right (ever).

Is this too much to ask for?

All the above with a text size that the user is comfortable with (not a system font size that only 10 year-olds with 20/20 eye sight can read).

Moving from Windows XP to Windows 8.1 is a bit of a change.  The following Microsoft document may prove to be of some help.

Other folks have had difficulties with the display and font on their Venue 8 pro's as well, and discussed it on the forums, if you aren't familiar with this thread, most have been looking for ways to increase the font size but you may find some help here as well.

I hope that this has been of some help.

Thanks for helping out again Terry.

To answer your questions:

>Did the tablet always have this problem out of the box?

  No.

>If not when do you remember the problem starting?

It started during my current trip.

>Was any changes made to the system display or fonts just prior to when you noticed the problem?

No.

>Was any applications or utilities installed just prior to when the problem started?

No.

I seem to be having more success now that I have made a basic adjustment.

Previously I had the system set up for 130% custom sizing and text font at 12 pt.
I changed that to 125% sizing and text font at 12 pt.

Some sites still require me to scroll to the right, but overall there has been an improvement.
Thanks again.

I think that's what Terry was talking about, in part:  the custom sizing may be causing the scrolling need, as vs. leaving the tablet at its initial screen and text size settings.

Yes I understood that.

Yet the 125% sizing (custom sizing) is working out better than the 130% sizing for scrolling purposes and fonts fitting into various fields.

It is virtually impossible for me to use the DVP8 without bumping up the sizing to at least 125%.

So for someone to suggest using the default sizing as a solution to side-scrolling issues, I say "my eyes ain't what they used to be". :)

Yep, I'm definitely in that group!  :emotion-5:

With an eight inch screen at 1280 x 800 I am not sure my eyes are what they used to be either.  There always seem to be a trade off on making the image on displays look sharp, and having text large enough that it can be read.

Thank you for giving me a verified answer.  Please let me know if any further problems occur.
