Running out of Disk Space
I have a Dell Venue 8 Pro 5830 with 23.5 GB of reported usable disk space on the C: drive. The Windows folder is taking 13.2 GB which includes all of the Windows Updates installed. The Users folder is 5 GB in size. The page, hiberfil.sys and swapfike.sys are taking 3.7 GB. The programData and Programfiles folders combine for 3.9 GB. Presently there is only 1.3 GB free space. It has been steadily decreasing. I had 6 GB free just a week ago. I have not installed any new apps and have actually uninstalled a few of the ones taking over 300 MB.
How do I recover any disk space? I have run the Disk Cleanup app numerous times including the System Files cleanup option. Are there any Windows folders that can be cleaned up?
The tablet is only six months old.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Peter

didn't get a notification of your last posting. i'm just concerned about you having enough room to do the BIOS upgrade and thought there might be a known (by other board users) threshold, space-wise, which would be too low in which to attempt the upgrade. i just did mine A09) at 3.5 Gb without issue; i'm guessing that anything above 1.5 would be safe. so no, no additional posts are probably needed.
can't pm you-didn't even know that option existed-your name is not recognised when i try.

I am not familiar w/ ccleaner. What does "use aggressively" mean?

check if you have a windows.old folder on your drive. That can be deleted without issues. It was / is created when you run Windows 8 to 8.1 update and disk cleanup doesn't remove it as far as I know.
There was / is also a reported problem with Windows system restore that it just runs and takes disk space away without any reason. Check in Control Panel "Recovery" and look at all available restore points. You might want to delete them all and see ho much space if any you gained. If your system runs OK you can just manual create a new restore point that if you have issues you can go back to that date. The recovery / restore point option fixed my issue when I ran out of space without any reason. Disk space just disappeared. :-)
Edit: forgot to mention that search indexing was also mentioned to possibly cause it.

I don't have a Windows.old folder. I checked the Recovery options and there aren't any System Restore points saved. Not sure why this is. I would have expected this option to be turned on by default. Haven't had any reason to check it until now.
I checked to see if the windows.edb file was running amuck. It is only 100 MB.
I am still looking for any clues where the space is disappearing to.

Suggested Steps, in order.
-run diagnostics on tablet (Quick Test)
www.dell.com/.../diagnose
-run an updated av scan
-turn off System Restore and reboot
-turn System Restore on and set it to 5%; then 'Create' a ('manual') system restore point. Test to see
if now working by reverting to that point (in time).
-update All recommended driver/firmware Recommended and Urgent updates (as well as BIOS if you don't
have A09). Not sure if the "System Analysis" button works but try it.Install Chipset first. Special
rules re BIOS install; are you familiar with these ?
www.dell.com/.../drivers
If you get stopped by any of these steps stop and report back. Someone should be able to help.
CCleaner www.piriform.com/.../download
btw: I dropped down under 1 Gb after 12 months use and decided to see what Ccleaner could do; like I said gained me 4 Gb without apparent harm. Wouldn't use til you ran the steps above.

The Quick Test passed all tests.
The Windows Defender full scan reported no problems.
Successfully turned off System Restore and rebooted.
Turned on System Restore and set Max size to 5%. Created manual Restore point which completed successfully. Used the System Restore option, selected manual Restore point. The tablet went through the reboot process and displayed a System Restore completed message. Went back to the desktop and saw the error message.
-------------------------
System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system riles and settings were not changed.
Details:
System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point.
Source: %ProgramFiles\WindowsApps
Destination: AppxStaging
The restore point was damaged or was deleted during the restore.
You can try System Restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error,
you can try an advanced recovery method.
----------------------------------------------------
The free disk space is now down to 400 MB. I looked at the System Restore configuration and noted that the current usage was 0 bytes and when I tried to view the Restore points there were none available. Maybe this is to be expected.
When I ran the System Analysis under drivers on the download page, it recommend the Intel Platform Driver Installer. Under other updates was listed one Urgent was a Panel Touch Firmware update and under recommended the following:
Dell Wireless 5570 WWAN Mobile Broadband Driver
Dell Data Protection
Dell Wireless 5810e LTE Mobile Broadband Driver
DSIA
Inventory Collector
Dell Venue 8 Pro 5830 System BIOS Version A09
Intel Atom Z3000 Series Driver
Dell Digital Delivery Application
Dell Wireless 1538 WiFi Bluetooth Driver
Intel Trusted Execution Engine Interface Driver
Dell Wireless 1538 WAPI Application
I have not performed any of these installs nor downloaded them. Not sure I have enough space.

You deleted all stiff in Recycle Bin, right.
If you want to continue trying to fix SR (recommended) then move slider down to 1 %; that will give you enough room for 1 restore point. Perhaps setting it at 5 % allocated more space than you had left, thus the error. (Took approx 290 MB). Give it a shot.
If it kicks out the same message let me know AND, while you wait for a response, from an Admin Command Prompt, run this:
sfc /scannow

First I want to thank you for following up on this thread.
The recycled bin reclaimed 400 MB so I'm back up to 720 MB. When I run TreeSize and look at the System Volume Information folder I see a System Restore folder 726 MB in size. Assuming that this is where the Restore point is saved, then looking further it appears that the WindowsApps folder in the RP is only 653 MB and the actual size under Program Files is 983 MB. So in conclusion I don't think there is enough space for a RP.
When I run the vssadmin tool in an elevated command window it shows no allocated space used and no shadows found. Once again I am assuming this is the right tool to use to query the System Restore information. The 5% max size is 1.16 GB.
I ran the sfc command that you listed before starting this thread and it reported a number of corrupted files, but was unable to recover all of them. It referred me to a CBS.log file which was very lengthy. Unfortunately I couldn't make much sense of its contents. Is it worth trying again?

first off, i am no too familiar with vssadmin so i won't go there.
for comparative purposes my treesize Allocated numbers, from top to bottom are:
13.7, 3.6, 2.3, 2.3, 848.4, 220.4, 32.5
the SVI number is after deleting all points, setting to 5 %, creating a RP and reverting to same. Contrast that to your very large number(s) indicating to me a definite problem with SR (if we're saying my system is 'the working model'). also my 'Current Usage' at this configuration is 13.44 Mb.
i think you can make a RP; you just can't revert to it. caused by the corrupt system files ? likely at least part of the problem. since the sfc command can't fix those (at this time anyways) I would for now run chkdsk to verify no issues there. i've also optimized(defrag) the ssd drive.
Btw, i too have the same sfc 'inability to fix' problem with a windows 7 laptop; i haven't taken the time to find the cause of that but when you open the cbs log a CTRL+F entering the word "Failed" is a good starting point.
would be good to troubleshoot this so you don't have to attempt a complete refresh which sometimes fails badly. if i get a bw or track an online solution down i'll post it asap.

forgot to mention: turn off SR til fixed
look at this thread re indexing
en.community.dell.com/.../19581811
also there is an optional update 400+ Mb but can't hurt; i would install it
btw, you don't have a micro sd card installed with changed paths do you ?; might complicate issues
Edit: Re a fix for sfc...Found this re 8.1 (wouldn't work on mine, yet); always use elevated prompt:

I will respond to your last two posts -
I ran the Error Checking tool in the drive properties window and no errors were found.
I ran a disk defrag which finished very quickly.
I looked at the CBS.log file and unfortunately the log entries for the sfc command I ran days ago had been overwritten by newer entries. It did report corrupted component store entries more recently.
Turned off SR and decided to run the Disk Cleanup tool again. It ran for many hours with most of the time spent in the Windows Update cleanup step. After it finished I am back to 2.19 GB free. I had installed the optional update before starting this thread. It originally complained about lack of free space, but after uninstalling some Metro apps I was able to get it to finish successfully.
The search index problem does not appear to be mine. The windows.edb database file is 75 MB.
Finally ran the DISM command you recommended and it repaired a problem in the store. Running with /checkhealth option now shows no corruption.
My treesize numbers are
11.3G Windows, 5.1G Users, 3.5G C_Root, 2G ProgramData, 1.7G ProgramFiles, 726M SVI, 148K Drivers
Should I turn on SR now and try a manual RP again? If I should install the BIOS update (in addition to the other outstanding Dell ones), what is the chipset install that you referred to? I have not done a BIOS update before and would appreciate some help.

may sound redundant, probaby is, but i would run the sfc again and get the all clear from it. then do the SR bit at 5 % (where i set mine). i'd hold off the bios upgrade til til you get a secure platform and more space to work from (ccleaner).
Q. do you have an sd card installed ?

I was able to run sfc /scannow and it found corrupted files and repaired them successfully. I turned SR on and created a RP. I was able to use the RP to perform a successful SR without any errors. I have downloaded the free version of ccleaner. Is this version sufficient to perform the cleaning that you recommend? Is Registry cleaning necessary or should I just run the File cleanup?
I do not have an SD card installed.
