~~This is a solution from from winkster13 that worked great for me~~

I was receiving Invalid Battery as well as "plugged in not charging".

I reset to factory and that did NOT work.

I disconnected the battery and reconnected and now it works.

AND

Here is the YouTube video I watched to remove the case:

www.youtube.com/watch

Thanks, winkster.

Surgery completed successfully. I let you know if the patient successfully recovers from its debilitating condition of lack of energy and inability to get a replenishing night's sleep.

~UPDATE~

Several days of success cycles of work and charging. Patient has resumed normal day-to-day activity with no ill effects.

I think Winkster13 found the cure.

I have had some difficulty with the two barbs that stick up on the micro USB. Over time,  after many uses, they wear down and the fit into the tablet 's port is loose. Then it tends to lose connection and stop charging. I have had to buy multiple replacements throughout the life of my tablet. You can always see the difference in the length of the barbs between the old and new. Always fixes the problem.

I am having the same problem - sometimes it says "plugged in not charging" sometimes it completely shuts down when I plug the charger in, and sometimes it works fine - this all started after I did a bunch of updates - I am not sure if this is coincidence or not

Jamesb1003 and char22

I thank the both of you for taking the time to post here, I know that something like this can certainly be frustrating. I have a couple questions that may work to a solution. What is the version of the table that you have is it the new 3840 or the original 3830? What version of Android is installed? How long have you noticed the problem?   I know that you char22 mentioned that this occurred after running an OTA, was this the case with you Jamesb1003?

My Venue 8 charged fine for about 2 days now we are back to the above stated problems - using Dell charger and cord, says "plugged in not charging"about 1/2 the time, nothing the other half - sometimes it just shuts down when I plug it in to charge - any ideas?

How do I find out what version of the table that I have?  You mentioned 3840 or 3830 - again, I am not very computer literate, thanks!

I have had a similar problem occur.  This is a refurbished model that I just received, model 3830 stock with 4.2.2. While I was downloading from the play store the 4.4.2 update became available.  During this time the tablet had a full charge and discharged down to @ 60%.  I plugged it in prior to doing the update to 4.4.2.  After installing I unplugged it again and did a few random things as we do with our tablets.  It was then down to about 50%.  I plugged it in and the tablet shut off.  While it was plugged in I rebooted just to make sure it was okay and set it on my nightstand.

Come the next morning after being plugged the battery was at 45%.  So while the tablet was tuned on and in my nightstand no charging occured.  I shut the tablet down.  On accident I pressed the top button briefly and it showed the tablet charging.  After a restart, and testing several cables and no sign of the tablet charging i turned the tablet fully off again and noticed the charging animation again.  I left the tablet off while plugged in and came back to a fully charged tablet.  I then booted it up, unplugged it, checked my email and plugged it back in.  It is now showing the charging symbol next to the time and it is charging.

Maybe try plugging in the tablet then powering down and see if it charges then.  Obviously a bug and may require some update to the USB settings via android.

As an update to above.

This problem happened again last night.  After using the tablet on and off during the day I went to charge the unit via the wall charger and it instantly shutdown.  The device would not boot up while plugged into the charger.  Once the USB connector was removed from the device it would fully boot.  I then plugged it back in and it indicated that it was charging via the battery animation next to the time.  Set it down until the next morning, when I removed the USB connector and realized the tablet had at some point shut down.  After booting up I noticed the battery had not charged.  I have not tried charging via computer USB yet.

I only charge via my computer, I have never tried the wall charger, I also use car charger, I use my own USB cable, haven't taken dell's out of the box.

I have no problems charging or any other problems reported.

I am running 4.4.2, tablet is rooted, I am using 4.3 fastboot cause it allows adb root support via fastboot.

My Dell Venue 8 was running fine for a couple of weeks after I received with Android 4.3 loaded. It updated to 4.4.2 and a host of problems ensued. A Dell representative said to do a full reset, which I did.

After that, I got  "Invalid battery!" and "Plugged in, not charging" messages.Within a couple of days, the battery ran down and I had an inoperable brick. It took almost three weeks for me to get a Service Request authorization. Sent the unit in for "repair". Came back with 4.2 installed. Did an OTA to 4.4.2 and am now having same problems I did before with black boxes on screen, frequent crashes and restarts.

No battery problem yet, but if I reset it, I bet there would be.

I'd suggest that you get an RSA and send it in for service, though ultimately I think there is a high probability of this problem occurring again.

So, it's not a perfect solution, but if I turn off my tablet, restart it and then plug it in, it works fine and charges perfectly

Thanks for tip, but it's not working. I shut it down plugged in and started it unplugged and ever variation possible. I tried 3 different USB cables, two different chargers... Tried charging it while turned off. Turned on and plugged in it will say "Charging" but it never goes above 1%, even after a few hours. Then it will swap over to "Not charging." It will go back and forth all by itself. No touching, no wiggling... it just does what it wants lol

It's only been six weeks and I haven't used it  for more than 12 hours (set up and watching movies on the plane). Office Depot said since its not working I can trade it for another and even trade up if I pay the difference.

My first experience with a Dell product, btw.

My device matches these symptoms. It charges only when it wants to. certainly won't charge off the OEM charger and cable. Very frustrating. It worked fine until the latest 4.4.2 update. Before the update it would charge off anything even a little battery backup device. Now I use it until about 40% and panic the find some combination that will work for one night.  I have found that if a plug it in (shuts off of course) then hold the volume button and get the boot menu and force restart it might charge sometimes.
