Poweredge R220 Upgrade path

Hello everyone,

I recently acquired a Poweredge R220 and need some guidance on updating it. Im trying my best to upgrade the  RAM from 8GB to 32GB. Silly me for thinking it would be a simple swap. Have confirmed the RAM modules I've got are compatible. Currently the BIOS is v1.4 which I believe needs to be v1.11 in order for that to work. So far my understanding is that in order to do that I need iDRAC and LCC to be upgraded. Try as I might I cannot seem to get any success. Every time I attempt to upload any version above the current one it says unable to validate certificate. I have tried extracting the firmimg.d7 and uploading that which does work and allows the update to proceed but once completed I can no longer access the iDRAC web ui. I can then go into the LCC directly and force it to roll the update back and regain access to the web ui. I have been searching online most of the day and not having much luck so I thought I would see if someone could give some feedback as I feel like I've hit a wall.

Hello thanks for choosing Dell and welcome to our community.

NOTE: Minimum supported memory is 4 GB and maximum supported memory is 32 GB.

NOTE: 1R and 2R in the following table indicates single- and dual-rank DIMMs respectively.

System memory

Your system supports DDR3 unbuffered ECC DIMMs. It supports DDR3 and DDR3L voltage specifications.

  • NOTE: MT/s indicates DIMM speed in MegaTransfers per second.

Memory bus operating frequency can be 1600 MT/s or 1333 MT/s, depending on:

  • maximum frequency of the DIMMs
  • maximum supported DIMM frequency of the processor

Hi,

The server only supports ECC memory : https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-my/poweredge-r220/PER220OMPublication/technical-specifications?guid=guid-5586282a-ea78-43dd-81b8-72500db0c8b7&lang=en-us hence mixing Non-ECC and ECC memory will have errors. For troubleshooting, please only use ECC memory.

If the current memory is 1R, please populate the sockets by highest rank count in the following order – first in sockets with white release levers, and then black. Hence, you will need to install 2R memory on white release levers.

There is no 8GB UDIMM in 1R configuration specification.

I've tried checking on the processor, Celeron G1821, please confirm this model as there is no G1821 exist. I couldn't find any information on a genuine Intel Celeron G1821 processor.

If possible, please remove the existing memory and install the new memory to check if it has any issues. Moving next would be installing the existing memory on the next black levers. Here is the installation guideline: https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-my/poweredge-r220/PER220OMPublication/general-memory-module-installation-guidelines?guid=guid-65e6df8e-f8f7-4510-b747-b2140ee1d960&lang=en-us

Hi

I am Hafiz. Luckily I manage to upgrade BIOs to 1.11.0 and Idrac/ lcc to the latest possible. However failing to upgrade RAM both ECC and non ECC. The chipset is celeron G1821. The current RAM is 1 x 4Gb non-ECC. The existing RANK for the current is 1. The one I tried is 2. Is this matter? Any RAM UDIMM 8Gb with rank = 1?
