Dell R720 iDrac7 Upgrade Path
Currently running an R720 want want to update the iDrac and Lifecycle Controller to the latest as I'm seeing SSL errors and currently have to access the interface on a very old browser. Is there a recommended upgrade path from the following versions?
BIOS Version: 2.9.0
Firmware Version: 1.40.40 (Build 17)
Lifecycle Controller Firmware: 1.0.8.42
I found an upgrade path but that appears to also be an older BIOS while mine appears to be on the latest, just want to make sure I can follow the same/similar iDrac and w/ LCC updates following that.
BIOS 2.0.21
iDrac 1.57.57
BIOS 2.1.3
iDrac w/ Lifecycle Controller 2.21.21 (the updates merged after this point)
BIOS 2.4.2
iDrac w/ LCC 2.40.40
BIOS 2.5.1
iDrac w/ LCC 2.63.60.62
BIOS 2.6.0
iDrac w/ LCC 2.65.65.65 (latest)
BIOS 2.9.0 (latest)
Thanks in advance!

This update sequence looks good. You can update 1.66.65 instead of 1.57.57 and add 2.10.10.10 before 2.40.40.40. From 2.10.10.10 onwards iDRAC and LC merged to single build. As you have latest BIOS you can skip all BIOS updates

I have a poweredge r720 which needs to be updated. Can i jump the upgrade idrac7 from 1.57.57 to 2.65.65? And BIOS 2.4.3 to 2.9.0?

Hello,
for iDRAC i suggest you to update to 2.10.10.10 before.
No problem to update BIOS to 2.9.0
Thanks

Hello, 1. 57.57 was from 10 years ago (release in 2014)- no one has tested for direct upgrade unless community members chip in to share their experience-All I can say is do read release notes for each iDRAC you missed.

I have a Dell R720-XD that I cannot get the lifecycle controller updates to work. They keep telling me they are not for my system. I am running BIOS 2.9.0, My IDRAC version is 1.65.65.04, my IDRAC FW is 2.21.21 build 12, and lifecycle is 2.21.21.21.5 Build 5. I'm not sure what I am missing, but the IDRAC/LC updates 2.40.40 and above all error out, saying they are Invalid for the current system. Please help!

Hi,
Can you get a screenshot of the actual error message?
I'm little confused, is your iDRAC on 1.65 or 2.21? I'm assuming it is on 2.21 since you mentioned LCC is 2.21.
I recall there will be issues if you updated the BIOS too far version that iDRAC version. You should update the version concurrently. If you were to downgrade BIOS version, you can likely brick the server.
Previously I encountered a post before, and the user mentioned he tried using the SUU update, it helped. :https://dell.to/3BoupUl

I’m not sure exactly where I saw it say the ideas version was 1.65. I’ve rebooted it a couple times trying to catch it and I don’t see it atm.
my service tag is <removed by moderator for publicly information>if that helps.
thank you
but here is a shot of the error message.

Hi,
It seems your server is an OEM version. So you can only update if available firmware via support link with enter your service tag. https://dell.to/3Vo9acb Therefore you can't use SUU method. OEM servers often have custom firmware.
Hope that helps!

2.63.60.61 seems to be listed as compatible. But will not run. Same error.
Is there anything I can replace, in order to have an updated iDRAC that I can actually use?

Hi,
I don't think you need to replace any hardware yet. First, the tag you gave, is showing OEM R720, it's not R720XD. So just to clear things up in case, anything rises up if needing to find hardware or firmware.
We will need to find out, what is your iDRAC firmware version first, as I mentioned it is not recommended to jump multiple versions, we should update incrementally. So just to be sure, the BIOS is 2.9.0 right? Are you able to access iDRAC?

That is correct. I can sign into idrac. It works fine. I just cannot use the virtual console.

Hi,
When you log in to iDRAC, on the top corner, you should be able to see About. Click on the About, and it will display the iDRAC version.
I assume it should display 2.21, confirm it is. Then try updating using 2.32.31.30, that's the next version after 2.21.

Yes, it is 2.21. I do not see a 2.32.31.30 listed in the downloads for my machine.
Thank you
Nevermind, I found one that works. Let me do these updates and get back to you.
