VMAX Has 150 Severity 1 issues

Hello,

My firm is interested in purchasing pair of VMAX's. I just read an article by IBM that states that the VMAX has had 150 severity one issues resulting in half of those with data loss. I have been googling all morning and can not find any supporting  documents. I find the this hard to believe. Is there any truth to this?

What do you think ?

Competitors tend to put a spyglas on every little issue and exegerate the worst case scenarios.... You'd probably fnid the same thing on other brands' storage systems.

Do you know how many firmware revisions have been released since the birth of the VMAX?

They may be listing things in the yet to be fixed section of release notes and you may want to check how they define "Severity 1" issue.  I also never trust what one vendor says about another especially when its a negative comment.

FYI I have 6 V-Max units in my data centers without any negative issue having occured.  One have been running production more than a year had several code upgrades including an interfamily 5874-5875.

we have had SO many issues with SRDF between VMAX and DMX-3, at one point VMAX R1 devices completely became un-usable and big oracle DB crashed.

Yes, I thought of this. I wouldn't be doing my job if i didn't investigate this claim.

We've had our VMAX since June and it's been performing beautifully...

We've had one major upgrade to 5875 code to support ESX VAAI, Virtual Lun Migrator & support for FAST VP.

We don't SRDF to our DMX3 so our installation is pretty vanilla right now - Knock on wood No Sev 1's or Sev 2's!

Dynamox,

I have seen couple of technical advisories from VMAX category. What was your exact situation? We are going to have a pretty much same SRDF setup as you described.

one instance was where we had DMX4 and VMAX replicate to DMX3. On DMX3 we only had one pair of RA ports, when we started running "create pair" commands between VMAX and DMX3 ..performance on R1 devices on DMX4 became horrible, that's even before we starting copying data between VMAX and DMX3. We had to immediately delete pair relationships between VMAX and DMX3 and performance on DMX4 returned to normal. EMC gave us another set of RA boards so we could split SRDF traffic between VMAX and DMX4. One set on DMX3 was replicating DMX4 and another to VMAX. Second instance we were creating devices on DMX3 and during that process response times on  R1s on VMAX just went through the roof and 5TB oracle DB eventually went down, needless to say EMC has yet to figure out what happened and can't re-produce that in the lab.
