Stuck adding storage to IBM AIX box
I am simply trying to add one device from a DMX-4 to an IBM AIX box.
I've gotten this far:
DETTRN /usr/symcli/bin $./symmaskdb list devs -wwn 10000000xxxxxxxx
Symmetrix ID : ----------------
Originator Port wwn : 10000000xxxxxxxx
User-generated Name : buttercup/fcs1
Sym Dev LUN
Name Dir:P Physical Device Name VBUS TID SYMM HOST Attr Cap(MB)
------ ----- ----------------------- ---- --- ---- ---- ---- -------
0028 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower8 0 0 3e 4 3
0029 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower9 0 0 3f 5 3
01C4 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower2 0 0 40 6 61425
01C5 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower3 0 0 41 7 61425
01C6 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower4 0 0 42 8 61425
01C7 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower5 0 0 43 9 61425
01C8 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower6 0 0 44 a 61425
01C9 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower7 0 0 45 b 61425
0220 8C:1 Not Visible 0 0 3c N/A 35723
How do I turn device 0220 from "Not Visible" to a visible device?
I've tried running cfgmgr & powermt config but nothing changes. Status is in RW mode:
DETTRN /usr/symcli/bin $./symdev -sid 28 show 0220 | grep "Device Status"
Device Status : Ready (RW)
I'm at a loss.. any help from the gurus would be greatly appreciated.

once you are done with masking, on AIX you have to run cfgmgr, powermt config and symcfg discover.

run "sympd list" instead of symmaskdb list devs.

good, anytime you add device to a host, you want to run symcfg discover to update symapi database that resides on that host. Welcome to the forums

Okay, now the next big question.. is the seqeunce different for when you're masking devices to create one big store? My next quest is to mask drives to create a 1TB store.. which I've done..
DETTRN /usr/symcli/bin $./symmaskdb list devs -wwn 10000000xxxxxxxx
Symmetrix ID :
Originator Port wwn : 10000000xxxxxxxx
User-generated Name : buttercup/fcs1
Sym Dev LUN
Name Dir:P Physical Device Name VBUS TID SYMM HOST Attr Cap(MB)
------ ----- ----------------------- ---- --- ---- ---- ---- -------
0028 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower8 0 0 3e 4 3
0029 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower9 0 0 3f 5 3
01C4 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower2 0 0 40 6 61425
01C5 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower3 0 0 41 7 61425
01C6 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower4 0 0 42 8 61425
01C7 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower5 0 0 43 9 61425
01C8 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower6 0 0 44 a 61425
01C9 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower7 0 0 45 b 61425
0220 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower10 0 0 3c c 35723
0222 8C:1 Not Visible 0 0 3d N/A (M) 1107427 <========
Except this time, the symcfg discover doesn't change the status.. did I miss something else since this is technically different?
thanks.

did you run "symmask refresh" after you masked the device ?

hmm.. no results..
DETTRN /usr/symcli/bin $./symcfg discover
This operation may take up to a few minutes. Please be patient...
DETTRN /usr/symcli/bin $
Stick with me, because I'm kinda a noob. Our EMC expert guy quit with no knowledge transfer.

Well, I'll be. I don't know if it was just taking its sweet time, or perhaps the cfgmgr -v fixed it, but after I did that, I ran the powermt display dev=all and it showed up:
Pseudo name=hdiskpower11
Symmetrix ID=xxxxxxxxxxxx
Logical device ID=0222
state=alive; policy=SymmOpt; priority=0; queued-IOs=0
==============================================================================
---------------- Host --------------- - Stor - -- I/O Path - -- Stats ---
### HW Path I/O Paths Interf. Mode State Q-IOs Errors
==============================================================================
0 fscsi1 hdisk21 FA 8cB active alive 0 0
then another..
DETTRN /usr/symcli/bin $./symcfg discover
and it showed up
0222 8C:1 /dev/rhdiskpower11 0 0 3d d (M) 1107427 Perhaps it takes a few minutes for everything to configure, or did the cfgmgr actually invoke it?

if you run cfgmgr -v ...do you see any errors ? What does powermt display dev=all look like
