SMC setup.

vmax is setup and can access it through service processor(SP), now i want to bring back the steps..indeed from this forums that, i do the following now:

Since I have access to the SP,

  1. once this management host(windows VM) containing ESX  is zoned to vmax, I will provision 6 or 8 GKs to the windows host in one path from VMAX FA port, and another set of 6 or 8 GKs to the same host thru different FA port (as i have read somewhere that same GKs cannot be shared in two paths/FAs as normal volumes (confirm this). I will make sure these 12 GKs are RDMed to the Virtual machine server.
  2. then I Install Solutions enabler on 7.1.2 on the box and apply (all necessary licenses or just SMC license ?) and then Install SMC 7.1.2

Thanks all.

you provision 6 gatekeepers to ESX, do not multipath them as it may cause refresh issues in the future (see primus emc186179). You can present 3 gatekeepers down one FA and another 3 gatekeepers down another FA. Make sure these are dedicated gatekeepers and not shared with other systems. In vSphere rescan for new devices, then present them to your Windows VM as RDM (physical compatibility mode). Install symcli (and appropriate licenses) and then SMC with its license.

I need some clarity here, I cannot provide GKs before anything is licensed on SMC on SP or  I have to install Solutions Enabler and license all components to it and then provision GKs ?

you can not install anything on SP. As far as i know SMC on SP should be already licensed when CE enables it.

I understand and see that SMC is installed on SP, my question is it doesnt allow to provision GKs unless the base features are licensed is it correct ?,  So I was wondering before using any feature or masking/mapping is there a need to apply base licenses so that the feature gets activated ?....if that is the case then I have to apply licenses and do the gatekeepers provisioned..

Thanks Dynamox,

is the GK only through ONE path applicable to VMAX too? that primus mentioned the environment as "symmetrix" only as of now

Yes, GKs are recommended through one path only. It becomes absolutely necessary when you have Multipathing software other than EMC Powerpath. EMC Powerpath has an intelligence to understand multipath GK devices and can work without any issues. But if you do not have EMC Powerpath or using any other Multipathing Software then DONT use multipath gatekeepers.
