DP Tier Storage creation

I am  looking to create a series of DP tiers on a VMAX to support Raid 10 configuration for an exchange enviroment. The design I am working from calls for two DP tiers one containing 38 disk the other 8 disk to be created from a single physical disk group . However I see no way to actually specify what number of disk are in each group, it allows me to specify the disk group but not the actual number of disks etc. Is there a way to actually specify what is in each DP tier  in terms of disks

The plan  as far as I can tell is to create these two DP tiers as mirrored disk at the physical level then create stripped meta devices across these to give me raid 10.

I can just create a series of raid 1 volumes directly from the disk group to give me the same effect but would rather use the DP tier function if I can find a way to actually create more than one DP tier group from the same disk group

It's not possible to have a subset of disks in a diskgroup belong to a tier - the tier will contain ALL the disks in the diskgroup. It is possible, however, to have two separate tiers defined on the same diskgroup.  Movements to the tier will potentially use all the disks, however. The only way to truly separate the disk resources is to have the disks in separate diskgroups.

The diskgroups cannot be manipulated via software (Unisphere or SE). You will need to work with your local account team to come up with a plan for reconfiguring the diskgroups.  It may be possible to do this without disrupting the data if the sane RAID affinity groups are maintained when configuring the new diskgroup.  After things are reconfigured, you can use VLUN to migrate devices between diskgroups to get the right devices on the right set of disks.

Please consider moving this question as-is (no need to recreate) to the proper forum for maximum visibility.  Questions written to the users' own "Discussions" space don't get the same amount of attention and can go unanswered for a long time.

You can do so by selecting "Move" under ACTIONS along the upper-right.  Then search for and select: "Symmetrix Support Forum"

Chris

Thanks for this have now worked out how to move this

Do not think the approach in the design will work, They call for two pools one for the exchange databases the other for the exchange logs so as to seperate them onto different physical spindles.

A DP tier is more in line with FAST DP rather that what the orginal design wanted which is to keep the exchange load completely seperate from the rest of the activity on disk on the VMAX and divided between the database and logs

For this I really think I need two seperate disk groups containing the required number of disk in each for the databases and logs however the way the system is set up I only have a single disk group for the exchange requirement

What I need is therefore to seperate out a number of disk from one disk group to a new disk group not something I have seen done outside a bin file change not using any symconfigure command I am used to anyway

This way I can create the required storage at raid 10 with the degree of seperation from the rest of the disks in the array which are in a set of FAST VP tiers

If this was a VNX it would be straight forward as i can remove disk from the groups and add them to new raid groups but not seen this done on a VMAX

The other issue is that all the disk in the target disk group are already in use so can see know way to get the reqwuired disk other than add new disk or get a bin file chnage done and get emc to move the LUNs around on teh physical back end to get the disk free to create a second disk group

That is basically what I thought. Thanks for the answer as it confirms my issue and what has to be done

In Unisphere for VMAX there is a way to remove disk from a disk group but all the disk have data on them so I would need to get emc or find a way to move the data hypervolumes from some of these anyway to free the disks up before removal

The best way is to either add additonal disk to meet the requirement or as you say work with the local account admin to move disk into different disk groups after we have migrated the data
