devices are mapped to FA's without masking view

I'm using SMC to manage VMAX-SE. I have created tdev's  a few weeks back but now I see most of them are mapped to FA's fa 7e1,7f1, 8e1,8f1.

I did not actually create any masking view or storage group for those devices.

When i select on the device, I see general, front end path, back end tab. want to know how the devices were mapped automatically to the front end ports.

My apologies John, I gave you the incomplete command.

Run

symaudit list -sid XXX -start mm/dd/yyyy -end mm/dd/yyyy -v

for verbose output. It gives more details along with the device numbers. SWPROC is the process that runs on the Service Processor. Symaccess is the command that is used for mapping/masking in VMAX.

Saurabh

Hi john,

Am not sure Its too late to answer, since am new to this community,

We can map the devices without creating View in Vmax_SE , by using Map dev command , but can't Mask by using any symmask command, But am not sure how  Devices are automatically mapped, may be  some other storage admin working on it ,

Thanks

Hello John,

If you are not sure who did it and you want to find out what happened in last two weeks? check the symaudit logs.

symaudit -sid XXX list -start mm/dd/yyyy -end mm/dd/yyyy >audit.txt

Regards,

Saurabh

This is a pretty new VMAX-SE and I am the only storage admin for it and I have only used SMC for managing the  VMAX till now not CLI .So I do not understand how the devices were mapped to FA ports.

Thannks Saurabh, will run the audit command when I go to work tomorrow moring.

Dynamox,

here is the optput for a device which is mapped to FA 7e1,7f1, 8e1,8f1. As I said I myself did not map it to those FA's

If the gremlins is doing the work that's fine dynamox but, if they come on the payday to demand the pay for the workdone then sure that will be a problem .

hmm..device is not ready (NR) so it's not bound to a pool. Maybe you have gremlins doing the work while you are asleep but they forgot to bound it to the pool first ?

Dynamox,

I created thin devices and I added/binded some tdevs devices to the pool and I have many tdev devices which I have not yet added to the pool.

I think the gremlins did not care about if they are bind/added to the pool. I see all the devices except 3 devices mapped to the mentioned FA's.

I opened SR with EMC and they dailed to my VMAX and said they had no info on who mapped to the fa's and simply gave a suggestion to unmap all the relavent devices using scrips .

Hello John,

Symaudit logs will tell you everything who mapped the devices and at what time? It captures everything be it from Solution Enabler or SMC.

Regards,

Saurabh
