2 sites, 4 VMAXs - SRDF topology question
Hi,
I have a question regarding a weird SRDF solution.
I have 4 VMAX, 2 on 2 sites at a SRDF/S distance (10km).
Production is only on site1, on 1 VMAX, site 2 is a remote site with no production.
Production moves to site2 if site1 goes offline.
Is this do-able ? (please, do not ask why we need 4 VMAX and not only 3 as regular SRDF/S Concurrent solution)
Site 1 Site 2
VMAX2 R2 VMAX4 R2

| srdf/s | srdf/a adaptive copy mode ??

VMAX1 R11 ------------------- VMAX3 R2 --> R1
srdf/s ??
What sould I put instead of the question marks in the schema so that I have an 'all synchronous' solution (or near one)?
- is it possible to use the R2 on site 2 (VMAX3) as a R21 so I can do a SRDF/S on site2 to the other R2 (VMAX4) ?
- must I use TF/Snap or clone on site2 before establishing a new pair with a SRDF/A replication on site2 ?
The idea behind it, would bein case of a site1 failure, to resume production on site2 (and always have a synchronous copy on the same site), to establish a new R11/R2 pair on site2, and then a new R2 on site1 when it goes back online.
Site1 would become production site again after a manual intervention to rebuild pairs as described in the schema.
Thanks for any odea or any help since 4 sites solutions are not documented... but may be rare or useless (but I must use 4 VMAX...)

Ok guys, do not worry and have some rest :-)
I talked to an EMC VMAX guru and now, the issue is gone.

I hear you Robert. Apparently it is too late to keep looking at this stuff.... now I need a drink AND some sleep. We'll try to decipher this again next week :-)

That's good news. I was planning on looking at this again this evening and digging in a bit deeper, but I'm OK with it already being resolved too.

It is possible to do a concurrent synchrone SRDF and a SRDF/DM on the 3rd array using SRDF/DM on a clone, but that the most complicated solution and in case of a esaster, no protection is achieved on the backup VMAX.
In our case, the best would be to do a LVM mirroring using 2 arrays, and a SRDF/S to the 2 others, but our servers do not support LVM mirroring.
Another solution, would be to use VPLEX, but since the servers/applications are not validated on VPLEX, the choice was to avoid this solution.
What we chose? We are not decided yet, but part of the job now is to convince the customer that VMAX is reliable enough to only put 1 on each site and do a SRDF/S between both since the main event they fear is a site destruction.
Hope it helps.
