updating drivers
Hi,
Dell SupportAssist only works for a short time when I first remove all of its components from my computer and reinstall it. But:
Unable to optimize my computer.
System updates are not installing.
Software updates failed.
System activity summary:
Last 90 days:
0 software updates installed.
0 GB of disk space reclaimed.
0 files optimized.
My warranty is no longer valid, but I should be able to get driver updates easily.
After much difficulty, I sometimes manage to get to support sites where I can download and install drivers. There are also critical ones from a couple of years ago.
Last time there were 30 in total, of which I installed one. There were 11 critical ones. Apparently I have to install them one by one.
If anyone has any tips on how to get driver suggestions in a timely manner, I would be grateful.

@Ana145 ,
SupportAssist is riddled with errors, and always has been. Dell Update is only slightly better. I removed both of those programs, and other Dell bloatware, as soon as my warranties expired on my two Dell computers (2019 XPS 8930 SE and 2020 XPS 15 7590).
I check the Dell Support website weekly for applicable driver and BIOS updates using my Service Tags. Only about every few months do I find an update for one of my computers. Once you get caught up with all of the updates SupportAssist missed, you should have the same experience. Be sure that you are specifying your service tag, not just your model number. Some models have hardware changes over their lifetime. You don't want to download the wrong drivers!
I hope this helps. Have a great day.
Regards,
Phil

Hi Ana145:
What is your Dell computer model, Windows operating system, antivirus, and BIOS version? If you have a Win 10 or Win 11 OS open a Run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter winver to find the version and OS build number. To find your current BIOS version open a Run dialog box, enter msinfo32 to open your System Information, and look for the field named "BIOS Version / Date" in the summary.

@garioch7 Hi Phil,
Thanks for the reply. Now that you mention it, I've come to the same conclusion. Yesterday I downloaded and installed 18/30 updates one by one. I found the updates for my machine on the Dell support website using the service tag. It will probably take some time before the updates I installed are taken into account and removed from the downloadable updates. It's good that others have had similar experiences. This was a great help and gave me peace of mind.
Have a nice day

Hi Ana145:
Just keep in mind that when you browse to your Vostro 14 5410 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-us/product/vostro-14-5410-laptop/drivers , click “Select Drivers”, and then choose the “This Device” tab and enter your unique Service Tag this should display a filtered list of Dell software and hardware drivers that are compatible with (but not necessarily required by) your Windows OS and system components. Some of those compatible Dell programs may be unnecessary bloat that you don’t need to install, and some matching hardware drivers might already be installed on your computer, so when you look for available updates this way it’s your responsibility to check Settings | Apps and/or Device Manager to see what Dell software and/or hardware driver versions are already installed on your system.
See the last section of my 26-Jul-2025 post in Liv in Groom's SupportAssist Updates failed, log now shows 8 failed updates with no name nor way to try reinstalling for more information.
________________________________________________
I no longer use Dell utilities like SupportAssist v4.8.x or Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.5.x to search for available updates for my Inspiron 5584 (like garioch7, I found they were too buggy and bloated) but that isn't a real problem for me since Dell rarely releases a new update for my 6-year-old Inspiron 5584 these days.
Did you ever try the Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.5.0 app (Dell-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_M8VJW_WIN64_5.5.0_A00.EXE, rel. 30-Jun-2025) listed on your Vostro 14 5410 support page? I'm not a big fan of the latest release [see my 05-Apr-2025 Dell Update v5.5.0 (rel. 01-Apr-2025) Installs Unnecessary Bloat] but I used this app for many years after I uninstalled SupportAssist and it always did a decent job of finding the correct updates for my system. This app would occasionally recommend a Dell software program I didn't want to install*** (e.g., Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.x, Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.x, etc.), but I would simply disable/uncheck any unwanted software in the list of available updates before starting the download.
________________________________________________
*** WARNING: I would strongly advise that users do NOT allow Windows Update or a Dell utility like SupportAssist v4.8.x or Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.5.x to update your BIOS, since any glitch during the update process could result in an unbootable system. There are instructions <here> in the SupportAssist v4 User Guide for disabling automatic updates to prevent an unexpected BIOS update - if you run update checks manually from the Home tab of SupportAssist this will allow you to review the list of available updates and decline any BIOS update before it starts to download.
When Dell releases a critical BIOS update that as been certified for my Inspiron 5584 I normally save the .exe installer recommended on the Drivers & Downloads tab of my Inspiron 5584 support page to my desktop, close all my open programs, and then right-click the .exe file and choose "Run as Administrator". However, the safer method is to flash your BIOS from a removable USB stick.

Hi,
I have installed: Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.5.0 application listed on your Vostro 14 5410 support page (Dell-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_M8VJW_WIN64_5.5.0_A00.EXE, rel. 30-Jun-2025)?
[see 05-Apr-2025 Dell Update v5.5.0 (rel. 01-Apr-2025) I could not find.
"This application occasionally recommended Dell software that I did not want to install*** (e.g. Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.x, Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.x, etc.), but I would personally disable any unwanted software from the list of available updates before starting the download."
How do I know which ones are unwanted? I do not install SupportAssist programs, however.
I installed BIOS 2.33.1, 12 Jun 2025.
Still, how do I know what to install?

I heard that old laptops will no longer receive BIOS updates. Will they stop after, for example, four years?

@Ana145 ,
I think that Dell does stop issuing BIOS updates after several years. My 2019 Dell XPS 8930 SE last had a BIOS update in the spring of 2024.
My 2020 Dell XPS 15 7590 has had a surprising number of BIOS updates since I purchased it. Its last BIOS update was March 2025.
And as @lmacri said, just because an update is listed, does not mean that you need it. The Dell Support site keeps recommending updates for Dell bloatware that I don't want, like SupportAssist, plugins, etc. I just skip those. If you are unsure what an update, just check the details, or ask here. We are always happy to help.
Have a great day,
Regards,
Phil

Hi Ana145:
If you go to Settings | Apps and search for "dell" does it show that Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.5.0 is currently installed on your Vostro 14 5410? NOTE: If you sort that list of Dell software by Install Date you should be able to see which programs were recently installed (or last updated).
Here's an old image from my Inspiron 5584 / Win 10 laptop I captured at Settings | Apps | Apps & Features on 08-Feb-2025 just before I uninstalled Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.4.0. The only Dell software I currently have on my Inspiron 5584 is My Dell v2.2.6.0 (the "legacy" UWP app for older Dell computer models that has a built-in Power Manager I use for managing my battery power usage; Fusion Service v2.2.14.0 is a pre-requisite for this app) and an old Dell CinemaColor v2.4.78.0 UWP app (which I don't use and should probably uninstall).
If Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.5.0 is already installed does it run correctly and present a list of recommended updates? The last time I ran Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.4.0 on my Inspiron 5584 the only available update it detected for my system was for Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.7.18733, which I declined (unchecked) since I don't want this plugin re-installed on my system.
_____________________________________________
I usually install the latest available BIOS and hardware drivers that match the Service Tag for my system, but the Dell software applications you want or need are different for each Dell computer model and individual user and is often based on personal preference. For example, if you did not purchase any third-party software from Dell when you bought you computer (e.g., Adobe Photoshop Elements, CyberLink PowerDVD, etc.) then installing Dell Digital Delivery isn't necessary, but installing it won't harm your system. See my posts in ygil's 07-Feb-2025 topic BSOD issues after Windows Updates for a discussion about this. If you aren't sure if you should install a specific Dell program just post back and garioch7 and I might be able to help.
Dell recommends the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery v5.5.x (also called Dell Remediation or System Repair) for my Inspiron 5584 because it provides a recovery environment that allows users to diagnose and troubleshoot issues that might occur before your computer boots into Windows. Shortly after purchasing my Inspiron 5584 it failed to boot into Windows and Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery would not automatically start after repeated system restart attempts. I wasted hours on the phone with Dell customer support trying to launch this emergency recovery software, and Dell finally suggested I reset my system back to its original factory condition. Luckily, I frequently back up my entire C:\Users\<myusername> folder to a removable USB backup drive so I didn't lose my Microsoft Office documents and other important personal data after the reset to factory condition.
After that abysmal failure I uninstalled Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery v5.5.x and the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.x, and switched to a more reliable recovery program called Macrium Reflect Free v8 disk imaging software. I use Macrium Reflect Free v8 to create emergency media (e.g., a bootable removable USB stick) and save the occasional full disk image on an external USB backup drive in case I ever have perform a emergency recovery of my system. Macrium Reflect Free v8 reached end of support in January 2024 but continues to function normally - see TechRepublic's Sept 2024 Top 5 Free & Reliable Hard Disk Drive Cloning Software for other good alternatives. As an added precaution I enabled Windows System Restore (disabled by default in Win 10 and Win 11) as instructed in the Windows Central article How to Use System Restore on Windows 11 so I always have a recent Windows restore point I can use to roll back my Windows OS to an earlier date.
