StorageScope, Network File Systems, and Chargeback
Hi all:
I would like your ideas about how to get StorageScope FileGroups for Chargeback working on UNC's where the Network File System Host is a User Created Host.
Why? My employer uses DFS. I can't discover our DFS root, as it's not really a computer. I also cannot discover a CIFS server.
I can discover a Discreet share by entering the CIFS server and the Share name. ECC then shows: MyFS@MyCifsServer.
I can also discover Network File Systems using the DFS Root and the Share name. ECC then shows: MyDFSLink@MyDFSRoot
To try to make a report that's even close to useful, in ECC, I've created "computers" to represent each of my CIFS servers. I've also created a computer for my DFS root. Now it becomes really frustrating when I try to do any Storage Scope report. SRMFILESYSTEM does not list all of my Network FileSystems as I would expect. Although I can find my user created Hosts (My CIFS servers and DFS root) in the StorageScope repository, I cannot relate my Network File Systems to my CIFS servers, nor can I relate Network FileSystems to my DFS root server.
Imagine being asked "Give me chargeback information for all DFS shares used by our Audit group."
It would be real sweet to select "MyDFSRoot" and select one or more Network File Systems to create an easy Chargeback report.
I have attempted to type in full UNC paths for chargeback groups, but this is rather ineffective.
Here's another thought: So let's say MyFS@MyCifsServer points to the very same target as MyDFSLink@MyDFSRoot
I have to discover two filesystems. I also have to run FLR on BOTH, in the case where MyFS@MyCifsServer points to the root of a CIFS shared filesystem and where MyDFSLink@MyDFSRoot points to a subfolder within the filesystem export of MyFS.
I'm now in a position to be required to write my own translation of the XML export of Microsoft's "dfsutil.exe" tool. Without it, I can't answer the question "How many application file shares come from the XYZ filesystem on CIFS02"?

StorageScope supports chargeback report for UNC path. You need to have file scan for UNC path. Summary scan is enough, no need for detail scan.
Network File System or UNC path can be shared by multiple hosts. It does not belong to any of the hosts. Even though you manually create host to relate to it, UNC path still does not belong to that host. In StorageScope repository, you will find that UNC path has HostKey always as NULL. That is why you can never relate network filesystem to any servers.
To create chargeback report for UNC path, you need to create file group through Utilities -> Settings -> File Groups for Chargeback, and then add you UNC path or multiple UNC paths to the file group by entering UNC path name.
To get chargeback report, you can directly run built-in crystal report "Chargeback ...".
