ecc 6.1 design on virtual machines question

I have the following
4 vm's win23k 64 bit
1 is store
1 is repository
1 is storescope
1 is san attached agent server (fcc, sdm ,clarion, san manager ,sym manager)
Which of the above servers will need to see gatekeepers as rdm's?Thanks

Hi,

You must only map gatekeepers to the VMs that are running the SDM and Symmetrix agents. These are configured as RDMs at the VM level.

You should reference Knowledgebase article emc180055: ControlCenter: How many Gatekeepers do I need on my Symmetrix Agent hosts?

I seem to remember a problem with my Server Guys trying to install Solutions Enabler on a VM because it didn't have a physical HBA (and we don't use NPIV yet). Wouldn't this prevent running the SE dependant agents on a VM even if you pass GKs through as RDMs?

I didn't spend a lot of time researching this when they brought it up as they just decided to use a physical host to control their TimeFinder/Clone sessions.

You don't need a physical (or even virtual) HBA to be able to install Solutions Enabler. Solutions Enabler just needs to be able to send SCSI commands directly to a Symmetrix device, and this works quite nicely when the necessary Symmetrix devices are made available to the VM using RDM.

If you're using Solutions Enabler in client/server-mode, it doesn't even need gatekeepers on the VM. (In that case, it does need access to SYMAPI server somewhere else though.)

I guess I'm going to have to talk to my Server Support guys again and find out what the issue was the first time around. I thought they said they couldn't install it, but they might have been misrepresenting the issue.

I have 2 physical and 2 VM's all with solutions enabler 6.5.3 installed. I added the gatekeepers as RDM devices to the VM's and am able to run symcli commands on the VM's the only thing that doesn't work is the symmetrix agent will not manage a symmetrix on the VM's even though I can run commands on it. SDM, CX, and all other agents do work on the VM's.

I also had an issue with gatekeepers on VM on ESX 3.5, on DMX4 and solution enabler 6

I allocated 14 gatekeepers on the same controler 0  (there had 2 virtual already there) and wanted to add more using controler 1.

Adding gateepers and power-on the VM were completed, but the symcfg discover and symcfg list failed returned error meesages.

I rolled-back and remove the RMD from the controler 1 and everything worked.

Question:

1/ Is there a limitation on number of gatekeepers depending on solution enabler or Enguinity version ?

2/  Is there a limitation on number of gatekeepers per VM ?

2/ Can I used more than 1 controler for all the gatekeepers ?

The quesion could be interesting when you are using the same VM to run mutliple snap, clone, srdf sessions that potentially need one gatekeeper per session,

when you said add using controller1 for all the gatekeepers , is that alternate path for existing GK devices or separate set of devices?    what multipathing s/w you use at this time
