Are there plans for a Host Agent for VIO Server (AIX)??

Hello All,

My manager asked a question which I couldn't answer so I'm asking you guys.

Are there a plan to support ECC data collection on VIO server though an agent of some sort? We recently re-deployed our entire midrange environment usnig VIO servers and VIO guests. We are able to install the AIX Host agent on the VIO clients but we are using space on VIO Servers which we'd like to track via StorageScope.  I know the VIO server doesn't use AIX its a special variant of AIX so I don't thinks its possible to install to the Master Agent and AIX Host Agent on the VIO Server. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Ayo

Hi Ayo,

Looking at the latest 6.1 Support Matrix (REV A21) it seems that the Master Agent and Host Agent are supported on AIX 5.3/6.1 VIO server and client 1.x/2.x.

Two footnotes to keep in mind though:

1) Only host information is provided for this type of virtualized configuration, as the host agent has no knowledge of the VIO virtual platform
details.

2) Active host commands, via ControlCenter agents on the VIO server partition, are not supported by IBM.

As Seamus pointed out, as long as the versions match up, you can run the AIX agents on the VIO server. We have been doing this in our shop since before it was officially supported and have had no problems. It would be nice if we could get support some day for mapping VIO clients to VIO servers, but for now this does the trick.
