XPS 8700 will not recognize optical drive

I bought this pc in january and the drive was working fine until this week. I didn't change any hardware or software recently. After a day of some heavy use (watched a dvd and burned two cd's) the drive is no longer detected. I would switch it out to test if it's a problem with the drive itself but the cables going to the usb ports on the top panel are blocking it. I am using win 8.0.

Hi Fraidcables,

Please try this registry fix. If that does not work, I would verify the drive is present when you run the Dell diagnostics.

It comes out by pushing it out the front panel according to the manual HERE in case you need to replace it. You have to remove the screws and the cables first of course.

The registry fix worked. Thanks. Any idea as to what would cause it? I'm guessing McAfee because it scans my DVD's.

Probably not McAfee.

I'm having more trouble with this drive. It will not read dvd's consistently. I have cyberlink powerdvd and it won't read some discs, even though they play in my living room dvd player. I was watching a netflix dvd one day and the next day it wouldn't play in the same drive. Another problem is that the pc won't boot with a dvd in the drive. I assume it's a BIOS issue or the autorun software on the disc.
