Updates for Inspiron 7746
Seagate ST500LM000/ST1000LM014 Firmware Update will not install. It goes to boot and hangs. Any suggestions? I'm using Windows 10.

Hi SmilingLady,
The device driver date, which is a Windows thing, has nothing to do with the firmware, which is a hardware manufacturer's thing. We recommend not updating firmware, especially for disk drives, unless there's a specific reason for doing so.

Any reason why you are updating the firmware on a hard drive?
Most people generally don't.

It's among the recommended updates for my system. The current driver is dated 2006, though I bought this system less than a year ago.

If that's the case, it sure would be helpful if Dell didn't say it was recommended. I mean, how's a body to know?
But thanks for your response. You and ieee488 have put my mind to rest.

Sort of like the guy at the local tire shop who "recommends" several services your car doesn't actually need.

Good point. Although he gets paid if you opt in. Maybe Dell's tech support gets paid if you opt in. Hmf.
