New HDD and Win 7 Home Premium --> Win 7 Pro

My laptop is currently running Win 7 Home Premium with backup data saved for recovery.  The HDD is degrading and I am going to replace it with a new one.  I am upgrading to Win 7 Pro in the process.  The question is can I do a data restore to the new OS from the old one or will have to reinstall all my applications again?

It used to be you could do an "anytime upgrade" for windows Vista and 7 -- that has been discontinued, so unless you currently have a license key for an anytime upgrade (which is NOT the same as a license key for a version of Pro), the answer is that you'll need to do a complete reload of the OS and then reinstall all your applications.

If you DO have an anytime upgrade key, AND you have an image of the existing drive (or it's not too far gone to make one), you can restore the image to the new drive and then apply the anytime upgrade license key.
