Intel Rapid Storage Technology made HDD dissapear
Recently my laptop stopped booting windows. When I turned it on, Intel Rapid Storage Technology 12.7.0.1936 window showed up and said, that one of my SSD volume is disabled and asked me to press CTRL+I to enter Configuration Utility. When I pressed that, I was only allowed to select Reset Disks to Non-RAID
option. So I selected it, but windows still failed to start with a Operation System not found
message.
So I changed the following settings in BIOS:
- SATA Operation: AHCI (instead of Intel Smart Response Technology)
- Intel Rapid Start Technology: Disabled (instead of Enabled)
- Boot List Option: Legacy (instead of UEFI)
Then I was able to launch windows setup from usb. Windows repair didn't help, I got The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again.
message. So I just temporary installed windows into SSD (during setup my 500GB HDD drive wasn't visible).
I even booted live ubuntu from usb and it didn't detect my HDD drive.
Also my HDD is not visible in BIOS. It shows Fixed HDD: None
.
My laptop's specifications:
- Dell Inspiron 14 7000 Series 7437
- Intel Core i5-4210U CPU @ 1.7GHz
- mSata Device LITEONIT LMS-32L6M m-(S1) 32GB
- Windows 8.1
Does anybody know any tool or approach how to unlock my HDD from RST and make it visible again?

The drive has failed (the early symptoms you describe were your warning of impending drive failure) and needs to be replaced.

Unplug the system and remove the base cover. Disconnect and reconnect the hard drive -- if that doesn't get the system to see the drive, the drive is toast.
If the system is under warranty, call Dell and they'll send a replacement drive.
If it's out of warranty, you will need a new 2.5" SATA notebook drive (probably 7 mm for this system).

I disconnected and reconnected the hard drive and it's still not visible in BIOS. Does that really mean, that my drive is a toast? Do I have any other options?

After trying to disconnect and connect disk for second time - it worked and became visible. Thank you!

During the past one week, I am facing an issue with the harddrive in my Inspiron 7572. The are two drives shown when I click 'My PC' - 'C' and 'D'. But while working with the laptop suddenly a notification will pop-up showing the following message :
Intel Rapid Store Technology
Available SATA harddisk removed.
Then, the I cannot see or access 'D:' drive!
Sometimes, it re-appears with this notification :
Intel Rapid Store Technology
SATA disk on Controller 0, Port 0 : detected.
Then, I will be able to see and access the 'D:' drive.
I used the SupportAssist software from DELL which was pre-installed in the laptop to check the system. It checked the system and did not report any issues. It also updated all the drivers. But still the issue persists. So I contacted DELL support. They asked me to boot into the BIOS get the device info which I did. I was told that there is no hardware problem and asked me contact their paid support team for any further assistance as I was told that I have only basic warranty! Ah ! I have warranty for only 39 more days before it expires.
And here, I find a comment that the symptoms show that the hard disk is about to fail soon !

I had a similar problem and a restart of the computer made my pc recognize the m.2 drive again.
